La Caries es la enfermedad bucal más prevalente a nivel mundial y afecta al ser humano desde temprana edad. Objetivo: Determinar la asociación entre el conocimiento de los padres de familia sobre salud bucal y uso de técnicas educativas en relación a la presencia de biofilm y caries dental en niños de 1 a 3 años del Centro Infantil del Buen Vivir Manuela Cañizares en Quito, Ecuador. Materiales y Métodos: La muestra fue de 45 niños y sus representantes. Los representantes rindieron una prueba de conocimientos diagnóstica, mientras que en los niños se examinó clínicamente presencia de biofilm y caries. El Índice de Higiene Oral Simplificado (IHO-S) fue usado para evaluar biofilm. Los criterios de la Organización Mundial de la Salud fueron usados para evaluar caries dental. Los representantes fueron divididos al azar en dos grupos. El grupo A recibió educación mediante Técnica Expositiva y el grupo B con Técnica Demostrativa. Siete días después se realizó la evaluación final. La prueba de T de Student y Regresión de Poisson fueron usadas con una significancia del 5%. Resultados: La prevalencia de caries fue de 26,7%. No se halló asociación significativa entre conocimiento y biofilm; tampoco entre conocimiento y caries. La diferencia entre la media del conocimiento inicial y final fue significativa (p=0,001), así como el IHO-S (p=0,001). La diferencia de resultados finales entre grupos A y B no fue significativa (conocimiento p=0,47 e IHO-S p=0,16). Conclusión: La educación ayuda a mejorar los conocimientos de los padres de familia y reducir el biofilm en sus hijos, independientemente de la técnica educativa.
