O estudo de caso realizado nos bairros do Vergel do Lago e Jatiúca em Maceió – AL, tiveram como principal objetivo identificar os principais pontos de descarte inadequado de Resíduos Sólidos Urbanos (RSU). A metodologia foi composta por visita in loco, questionários aplicados à população do entorno de pontos de RSU e entrevista com a empresa prestadora de serviços de limpeza urbana. No estudo de campo foram identificados 07 pontos viciados de resíduos no bairro Jatiúca, onde os resíduos predominantes são da construção civil, já no bairro Vergel do Lago foram identificados 16 pontos viciados de resíduos, onde predominava os resíduos domiciliares e a casca do sururu. Com a aplicação dos questionários frente à população confirmou-se que o descarte inadequado de resíduos é decorrente, na maioria das vezes, da falta de consciência da população, e que as principais consequências são: mau cheiro, alagamento das ruas e proliferação de insetos e animais vetores de doenças. Tanto no bairro do Vergel como da Jatiúca poucos souberam informar o destino final dos seus resíduos comprovando a falta de informação e desinteresse com relação às políticas públicas do município. O crescimento populacional, a ausência de conscientização ambiental, a carência de infraestrutura e de políticas públicas que visem uma melhor gestão dos resíduos sólidos, são causas explícitas do grande acúmulo desses resíduos de forma desordenada no bairro do Vergel do Lago e Jatiúca.
