Refractive error is a condition in which the cornea and lens fail to focus the light, resulting in reduced visual efficiency. Twelve million children are experiencing refractive errors worldwide and uncorrected refractive errors in children have been reported to cause asthenopia. This study aimed to determine the association between the types of refractive errors and asthenopia in children. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 111 students aged 10-13 years old in a public elementary school in Indonesia, SDN Penjaringan 10, in 2019. A questionnaire was used to assess asthenopia and the Snellen Chart, trial frames, and trial lenses were used for refractive errors examination. It was demonstrated that 87.4% of respondents experienced asthenopia, and 53.2% of respondents suffered from uncorrected refractive errors, mostly due to myopia. Fisher’s exact test results showed an association between refractive errors and asthenopia (p=0.019) with all myopic students experienced asthenopia. However, there was no significant association between astigmatism and asthenopia (p=0.754). In conclusion, not all types of refractive errors are associated with asthenopia.

The overall incidence of strabismus is higher in adults; approximately 1% of children have strabismus, while the estimation among adults is 4% but may run as high as 5.6%. The four types of new-onset strabismus in adults most often found were paralytic, convergence insufficiency, small-angle hypertropia, and divergence insufficiency. The stroke should be suspected in the sudden onset of paralytic strabismus. The most prevalent type of manifest strabismus found on stroke survivors was exotropia. Tumors, myasthenia gravis, thyroid eye disease are common causes of gradual-onset strabismus. Thorough examinations and proper referral are needed.

Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine are often used as a treatment for autoimmune disease, malaria infection, and now become an emergency drug for Coronavirus Disease-19 (COVID-19). Both are potential anti-inflammatory and antiviral agents. However, potential various side effects to the heart, nerves, gastrointestinal tract, and also eyes must be considered. Side effects on the eyes are retinal toxicity which can end up as irreversible retinopathy. Proper prevention is needed by recognizing risk factors and screening, as well as strict monitoring of drug use.

The prevalence of blindness in Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) reaches 1.0% and the ratio of blindness to ophthalmologist reaches 1:8000. This data means NTT is a place which has vision issues. Blindness is caused by cataract. Untreated cataracts can reduce the productivity of patients and his/her caretaker for quite a long time. Cataract surgery will not only cure the patient's blindness, but it will also improve the local economy if it is sustainable and on time. Lack of human resources, funds, and medical equipment are the major problems for performing cataract surgery in this area. The cataract surgery is performed at Elisabeth Lela Hospital. Visual acuity is performed before the surgery and 21-35 days after the surgery. The last step is calculating the Sight Restoration Rate (SRR) of all patients. Cataract surgery was conducted to 92 eyes. the SRR of all patients is 46.7%. There are four eyes (4.34%) with post-operative visual acuity <3/60.
