O emprego das plantas medicinais pelo homem, processo conhecido por fitoterapia sempre esteve presente na história da humanidade. Atividades relacionadas a medicina caseira oferecidas por parteiras tradicionais são obras de culturas regionais em que as necessidades da população priorizam práticas alternativas de saúde. Nesta perspectiva, o objetivo deste estudo foi realizar um levantamento etnobotânico sobre o uso de plantas medicinais, bem como suas finalidades, por parteiras no município de Serra Talhada – PE. Entrevistou-se 11 mulheres ditas parteiras nas áreas rurais e urbana, com idades entre 56 e 70 anos, a fim de promover um levantamento sobre o uso das plantas medicinais usadas por elas. Foram relatadas 14 espécies de vegetais com aplicações medicinais durante os processos de parto, com maior número de citação para Myracrodruon urundeuva Allemão (aroeira) e Ximenia americana L (ameixa do mato). Os usos mais frequentes estão relacionados a processos anti-inflamatórios e de cicatrização. As espécies estão distribuídas em 10 famílias, com maior representação para Fabaceae e Anacardeaceae. Os resultados obtidos assemelham-se a literatura consultada, de modo a enaltecer o conhecimento tradicional, subjugado pela ciência.
