Este estudo tem como objetivo contribuir para a compreensão das conseqüências do racismo, da discriminação e da intolerância racial existentes na sociocultura brasileira, que afetam a saúde mental da população negra. Tendo como metodologia o método de pesquisa-ação e observação participante, a pesquisa desenvolvida durante o Projeto Mãe-Criadeira - dirigido a gestantes negras e não negras de duas comunidades do Rio de Janeiro -, usando a idéia da Rede de Sustentação Coletiva (Guimarães,2001) como estratégia de intervenção, demonstrou contribuir para a diminuição dos efeitos nocivos do racismo nessa população de mulheres. A pesquisa baseada no pensamento teórico-clínico do psicanalista Donald Winnicott demonstrou que a exposição do indivíduo de descendência negra a um meio ambiente como o da nossa sociocultura provoca um esforço excessivo na manutenção e na realimentação do campo subjetivo (Podkameni e Guimarães, 2004) denominado por Winnicott (1975) "espaço potencial". O conceito de "situação conflitual traumatizante", proposto pelos autores neste trabalho, procura dar visibilidade a esse esforço que, por ser psíquico e não observável concretamente, põe em evidência seu caráter de situação de risco.
