Children and youth are showing increasing levels of mental health distress due to the climate crisis, characterized by feelings of sadness, guilt, changes in sleep and appetite, difficulty concentrating, solastalgia, and disconnection from land. To gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between climate change and children and youth’s mental health, we conducted a rapid review and a thematic analysis of the results in NVivo 12. Our findings show that children and youth experience a plethora of direct and indirect effects from climate change and this impacts their mental wellbeing in diverse and complex ways. Young people also have varied perceptions of climate change based on their social locations and many are dealing with feelings of immense worry and eco-anxiety. The mental health impacts of climate change on children/youth are tied to Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) but also need to be understood in relation to the Ecological Determinants of Health (EDoH). Through an eco-social lens, this paper explores these conceptual issues and uses them to provide a framework for understanding the interplay of social and ecological determinants of mental health for children/youth.
IntroductionMany young people report experiencing negative emotional responses to their awareness of climate change and the threats it poses to their future. With that, an increasing number of survey instruments have been developed to examine young people’s negative emotional responses to their awareness of climate change. This report describes a protocol for a systematic review that aims to identify, synthesise and critically appraise how negative emotional responses to climate change among young people have been measured in survey research. The research questions addressed in this review are: (1) How has negative emotional responses to climate change been defined and measured among young people? (2) How do survey instruments measuring young people’s negative emotional responses to climate change vary in terms of reliability and validity? (3) What factors are associated with negative emotional responses to climate change among young people?Methods and analysisSeven academic databases (CINAHL, ERIC, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Scopus, and Environment Complete) will be searched to retrieve studies published between 1 January 2006 and 31 March 2022 and published in English. Studies including survey instruments that measure negative emotional responses among young people (aged 10–24 years) will be eligible for inclusion. Targeted journals will be hand-searched. This review will follow Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 guidelines for systematic reviews. The methodological quality, in terms of reliability and validity, of the included studies will be assessed using the Consensus-based Standards for the Selection of Health Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) checklist for risk of bias of patient-reported outcome measures. To rate the quality of the instruments, we will use a modified Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations technique defined by the COSMIN guidelines.Ethics and disseminationEthical approval is not applicable for this study. While the COVID-19 pandemic impacted everyone, social determinants of health and structural inequities have had compounding effects that shaped the experiences of some sub-populations during the pandemic. Stigmatization, discrimination, and exclusion contribute to a disproportionately high burden of mental health concerns among sexual minority (i.e., lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, and other sexually-diverse) and gender minority people. Pre-pandemic, these health inequities are exacerbated by barriers to adequate mental health services including cost, waitlists, and experiences of sexual and gender minority stigma when accessing providers. During the COVID-19 pandemic, these barriers were further complicated by drastic changes in service delivery and access during the pandemic (i.e., a shift to online/virtual provision of care to reduce risk of COVID-19 transmission). To better understand the experiences of sexual and gender minority people accessing mental health services during the first three to nine months of the COVID-19 pandemic, we conducted semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of 15 health care providers and administrators (summer 2020) and 14 sexual and gender minority individuals interested in accessing mental health services (fall 2020) in British Columbia, Canada. We used interpretive description to inductively analyze interview data. Triangulating between the provider and service user datasets, we examined changes in mental health and coping during the COVID-19 pandemic. We recorded increases in isolation and lack of identity affirmation; inequities in accessing mental health services during the pandemic, perceived opportunities for mental health support, and avenues for reducing mental health inequities through system-level changes that deserve particular attention during the pandemic.
In Canada, community and policy leaders have issued urgent calls to collect, analyze, and mobilize disaggregated data to inform equity-oriented initiatives aimed at addressing systemic racism and gender inequity, as well as other social inequities. This essay presents critical reflections from a national Roundtable discussion regarding how meaningful community engagement within academia–community–government research collaborations offers the opportunity to harness disaggregated data and advanced analytics to centre and address the priorities of equity-deserving and sovereignty-seeking groups. Participants emphasized four key priorities: (1) Building equitable and engaged partnerships that centre community-driven priorities and address structural barriers to community engagement; (2) Co-creating ethical data governance policies and infrastructure to support community data ownership and access; (3) Stimulating innovation and pursuing community involvement to create contextualized, advanced analyses and effective visualizations of disaggregated data; and (4) Building the capacity of all partners to effectively contribute to partnership goals. Capacity building was viewed as a bridge across a diversity of lived and professional expertise, enabling intersectoral research teams to collaborate in culturally safe and respectful ways. Beyond identifying key structural barriers impeding the promise of disaggregated data, we present practical opportunities for innovation in community-engaged scholarship to address social justice challenges in Canada.
