En este artículo se analizan los enfoques teóricos sobre democracia y autoritarismo haciéndolos dialogar con las dos décadas de la Revolución Bolivariana en Venezuela. Revisa el cambio de régimen durante el gobierno del chavismo (1999-actualidad) e identifica el rol del proceso de recentralización como estrategia en la transición hacia un autoritarismo hegemónico. ¿Qué efecto genera la recentralización y por qué sirve como punto de apoyo para el cambio de régimen? Se plantea que la concentración de poder, a través de la subordinación de las autoridades territoriales y el avasallamiento de la autonomía local dentro de un proceso de recentralización, da a los gobiernos un impulso para endurecer su accionar autoritario.
