One of the prime pre cur sor for eth yl ene syn the sis -L-methionine and the in hib i tor of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid oxidase (ACO) -Co 2+ -were tested for their ef fects on sex ex pres sion and de vel op ment of Ane mia phyllitidis fern gametophytes. Five con cen tra tions of both chem i cals (0, 10, 25, 50, 100 µM) were ana lysed with ref er ence to antheridia and archegonia for ma tion, num ber and size of cells as well as thalli length us ing the three-zone model of gametophyte struc ture. Both sub stances, how ever at dif fer ent con cen tra tions, enhanced the num ber of GA 3 -in duced antheridia and sim i larly stim u lated the cell num ber and in hib ited thalli length. Both of them at 100 µM con cen tra tions with out GA 3 in duced meristematic area for ma tion while methionine also in duced archegonia in the api cal parts of gametophytes. It was found that ex oge nous ap pli ca tion of ACC (1-aminocyclo pro pane-1-carboxylic acid), a di rect pre cur sor for eth yl ene syn the sis (McKeon et al. 1995), en hanced GA 3 -induced antheridia for ma tion. This ef fect was connected with stim u la tion of the trans verse ex pan sion of cells in the antheridial zone of gametophytes which was fol lowed by re or gani sa tion of chromatin and in duc tion of nu clear DNA syn the sis (Kaź -447 ACTA PHYSIOLOGIAE PLANTARUM
