Leslie Stephen was an English author and editor who contributed significantly to the science-religion debate in the latter part of the Victorian period. Father of modernist author Virginia Woolf (1882–1941) and artist Vanessa Bell (1879–1961), he was a long-time editor of the popular literary periodical Cornhill Magazine and the Dictionary of National Biography. He was also a noted mountaineer, having served as president of the Alpine Club and editor of the Alpine Journal.
