Atmospheric deposition of lead (Pb) throughout the 1900s resulted in elevated amounts of this toxic metal even in remote forest soils of the northeastern United States. Soils can act as a net sink for metals and thus minimize groundwater and surface water contamination. Recent studies utilizing forest floor temporal data and models of total Pb in precipitation, surface soils, and streams have estimated the time scale of Pb release from soils. However, due to the limited availability and spatial variability of forest floor survey data, other methods for quantifying anthropogenic Pb movement are needed. This study uses the isotopic composition (206Pb/207Pb) of soil Pb and measurements of 210Pb and 226Ra to directly trace the transit of atmospherically deposited Pb in the soil profile. We also report on the recovery of an enriched 207Pb dose applied in 1984 to the surface of a soil plot in the coniferous forest at Camels Hump in Vermont. The isotopic composition of soil Pb in low elevation deciduous forests suggests that approximately 65% of the original atmospheric Pb load has migrated from the forest floor to the upper 10 cm of the mineral soil. Higher elevation sites with coniferous vegetation have thicker forest floors, which have prevented significant amounts of Pb from entering the mineral soil. After 17 years, the soil organic horizon in the coniferous zone prevented any penetration of the applied Pb into the mineral soil. Using 210Pb budgets in different soil compartments, we determine forest floor response times for atmospherically delivered Pb to be approximately 60 years in the low elevation deciduous forest zone and 150 years for the high elevation spruce-fir forest zone at Camels Hump. According to its distribution in the soil profile, we conclude that a dispersed release of anthropogenic Pb to groundwater and surface water is possible this century. Our results also offer independent confirmation of Pb deposition models previously generated for the region.

This review focuses on the long-range atmospheric transport of metals to organic-rich surface soils (mostly 50–90% organic matter) in the temperate, coniferous, and boreal zones of North America and Europe. From various air-pollution related measurements (air, precipitation, moss, peat cores) Pb and Zn are known to be transported long distances in the air in large amounts. Arsenic, Cd, Hg, Sb, and Se are also typical representatives of long-range transported air masses, and there is evidence that Ag, Bi, In, Mo, Tl, and W belong to this group of elements. Through the use of “environmental archives” such as ice and peat cores it has become evident that long-range transport of pollutants and associated contamination of natural surfaces is not just a recent phenomenon. There is compelling evidence for widespread enrichment of surface soil horizons in Pb from long-range transport, and many studies support enrichment of Zn. Mercury is also generally elevated by anthropogenic emissions over natural levels in organic-rich surface soils, whereas results for Cd are less conclusive. There is evidence that As, Se, Ag, Mo, In, Sb, W, Tl, and Bi all are subject to some enrichment in organic-rich surface soils from long-range atmospheric transport, but studies are still few for most of these elements. With the exception of Pb, little is known about residence times of the elements in the organic-rich surface horizon, and more research is needed on this topic. Further studies are desirable on the temporal and spatial trends in supply of the above elements, which are poorly known in large parts of the northern temperate zone.Key words: natural soils, metals, long-range atmospheric transport, organic matter, lead, zinc, cadmium, mercury.

We applied 15N-labeled ammonium and nitrate to individual branches of red spruce (Picearubens Sarg.) to examine the importance of canopy N assimilation in the field. Levels of labeled N were highest in the youngest foliage and youngest twigs, and twig ammonium assimilation exceeded nitrate assimilation. Approximately 5% of the ammonium and 1% of the nitrate applied to each branch was assimilated; because of throughfall interactions with multiple branches, canopy assimilation rates are expected to be 3–6 times larger. Twig 15N levels exceeded foliar levels for the younger age-classes in the ammonium-labeled treatments, suggesting that twigs play an important role in ammonium assimilation. Comparisons of these results with data from trees that assimilated 15N through their roots showed that the pattern of canopy N assimilation differs from root assimilation, primarily by the assimilation of large amounts of N by twigs. Our results directly demonstrate for the first time that canopy assimilation is a pathway for uptake of N in these high-elevation trees. Canopy assimilation of atmospherically deposited N may represent 2–8% of the total N requirement for spruce in the high-elevation forest. While canopy N assimilation may thus reflect only a minor anthropogenic alteration of N acquisition in these forests, the long-term fate of this N needs to be determined.

Changes over time in forest soils are important to global C balance and to local ecosystem function. Detecting change in C storage in the forest floor is hampered by high variability and the use of study designs that are not adequate to statistically detect change. Using estimates of variability from previous forest floor studies, mostly conducted in the northern USA and Canada, we conducted statistical power analyses to assess the ability of such studies to detect various magnitudes of change in forest floor C. The studies we surveyed were unable to detect statistically significant changes in forest floor C or mass smaller than 15 to 20%. Studies that remeasure plots or sites (i.e., paired designs) have greater statistical power to detect changes than those in which experimental units are independently located for the two sampling dates. The causal mechanisms of forest floor change influence the magnitude of the change, and accordingly our ability to detect such changes. The direct effects of climate change may be too small to be detectable by current designs, but larger changes in forest floor mass resulting from forest management, changes in tree species, changes in fire regime, or the introduction of earthworms are more likely to be detectable. With paired resampling and more efficient allocation of sampling effort, it should be possible for future studies to detect smaller changes.
