In January 1986 the Minister of International Trade announced the membership and terms of reference of a new private sector International Trade Advisory Committee (ITA C), chaired by Mr. Walter Light. The ITA C advises the Minister and Government on the broad policy aspects of the bilateral and multilateral (GATT) trade negotiations. In August 1986 the Minister announced the membership of 15 Sectoral Advisory Groups on International Trade (SAGITs). These are industry‐specific groups which serve as repositories of information about their own sectors. The role, nature and impact of these two different types of private sector trade advisory committees are discussed in this paper against the background of the Canadian‐United States trade negotiations of 1986–8 7. Also considered is the nature of this advice from the private sector as it relates to the role of the provinces and the national interests of Canadians, including consumers as well as producers. En Janvier 1986, le Ministre du commerce international a annoncé la composition et les termes de référence d'un nouveau comité pour le sectcur privé, présidé par Monsieur Walter Light. Ce comité a pour rôle de consciller le ministre et le gouvernement sur les divers aspects de la politique concernant les negociations bilatérales et multilatéral du GATT. En août 1986, le ministre a annoncé la participation de 15 comités consultatifs sectoriels sur le commerce international (SAGIT). Ces groupes représentent des industries spécifiques et agissent á titre de dépositaires des informations relatives á leurs secteurs respectifs. Le rôle, la nature et l'impact de ces différents types de comités consultatifs sur le commerce sont analysés dans cette étude à la lumière des négociations commerciales Canada‐Etats‐Unis de 1986–87. On a aussi traité de la nature des conseils provenant du secteur privé et de leur lien avec le rôle des provinces et les interêsts nationaux des canadiens, tant celui des consommateurs que les producteurs. Les implications relatives à la gestion des relations entre le secteur privé et le gouvernement sont énoncées tout au long de l'étude.
