A automedicação não é uma prática restrita à contemporaneidade: é uma conduta consolidada historicamente como parte do itinerário terapêutico empregado pelos indivíduos na gestão dos problemas de saúde. Os pacientes que se submetem a essa ação podem executá-la em diversos níveis, os quais variam de um elemento de autocuidado a uma violação do seu estado de saúde. Neste trabalho, que tem como objetivo evidenciar o conflito entre a autonomia do paciente e a hegemonia do saber biomédico em relação ao uso de terapias, foi realizada uma pesquisa de caráter qualitativo, com base em revisão bibliográfica, considerando produções encontradas na plataforma Google Acadêmico a partir dos termos “automedicação”, “automedicação responsável” e “automedicação na pandemia”. Chama atenção a quantidade de vocábulos de cunho negativo presentes nos títulos dos artigos relacionados à automedicação, como “malefícios” e “riscos”, e a ínfima quantia de trabalhos abordando a automedicação por um viés positivo e de autonomia do paciente. Isso reflete a impopularidade do assunto no meio acadêmico, o que pode ser explicado pelo fato de que esta visão parece contestar o papel e o poder do médico na prescrição de terapias.
