Nas últimas décadas, foram descobertas várias infecções virais até então desconhecidas, assim como reemergiram outras que haviam sido controladas ao longo dos anos. Em sua maioria, essas viroses atingiram a espécie humana por conta de atividades modificadoras do meio ambiente, migrações populacionais e novos padrões genômicos gerados a partir de mutações e recombinações genéticas. 1O vírus Rocio (ROCV), descoberto no Brasil nos anos 1970, é classificado como pertencente à família Flaviviridae e gênero Flavivirus (grupo B dos arbovírus, do inglês arthropod born virus). Esse grupo viral relaciona-se com encefalites, doenças hemorrágicas e hepáticas que acometem humanos e outros vertebrados. Dentro desse gênero, existem 13 tipos virais já reportados no Brasil: ROCV, YFV, ILHV, BSQV, SLEV, CPCV, Dengue 1 (DENV-1), Dengue 4 (DENV-4), Dengue 2 (DENV-2), Iguape (IGUV), Naranjal (NJLV), Dengue 3 (DENV-3) e Culex (CXFV).1 O ROCV é esférico, envelopado e possui nucleocapsídeo contendo RNA de fita simples e polaridade positiva, o que significa que seu RNA viral serve como RNAm para a síntese de proteínas virais e pode ser traduzido imediatamente após infecção da célula hospedeira. Seu genoma, de aproximadamente 11kb, decodifica proteínas estruturais (capsídeo, membrana e envelope) e monoestruturais (NS1, NS2A, NS2B, NS3, NS4A, NS4B, e NS5). A epidemiologia da doença permanece um mistério, assim como as causas de aparecimento e desaparecimento do ROCV, mas a possibilidade de uma nova epidemia tem motivado pesquisadores a buscar os mecanismos de infecção
