Abstract This article deals with errors and difficulties which pre-teachers encounter when solving elementary Math problems. There were 142 informants, belonging all of them to the Primary School Undergraduate Programme at the University of Murcia at the beginning of the academic year 2014/2015. To a great extent, errors are due to deficient learning of facts, skills and previous concepts. Error rate is over 50% in all years and half of the students fail the oral test. Their attitude towards Mathematics is positive, there is a medium anxiety level and only half of the students answered the questions about Mathematics correctly, which leads to the conclusion that improvement programmes in the field of Mathematics must be implemented.

Future teachers' attitudes towards mathematics can influence the teaching of this subject-matter in the earlier years. In order to know their attitudes, 1,150 Primary Education students (2nd, 3rd and 4th years) of the Faculty of Education at the University of CCC were surveyed during 6 academic years. They were given the Auzmendi (1992) test which is composed of 25 items on a 1-5 Likert scale. The results show that 1 in 3 students has a negative attitude (lower than 3). They also show that men have a more favourable attitude than women and that 4th-year students have the highest attitude. The item with the highest score refers to the self-confidence factor whereas the one with the lowest score relates to the liking factor.
To check their knowledge in 6th-year Primary School mathematical problem-solving, 174 undergraduate students doing the Primary Education Degree at the University of Murcia were asked 10 questions from the Official 6th Year Primary Test from the year 2015/16. The test consisted of two units of assessment. Second, third and fourth year students participated in the study and the results show that one in three participants did not pass any of the two units in the exam and that in the second year (the first one with a mathematics subject), for one of the units, half the students failed. The results also show that three in twenty students answered all the questions correctly and there were not significant differences regarding gender. The main difficulty students encountered was the equivalence between fractions, decimal numbers and percentages--only one in four students gave correct answers.
