This research proposes an efficient energy management system for standalone and grid-connected direct current (DC) distribution networks that consider photovoltaic (PV) generation sources. A complete nonlinear programming model is formulated to represent the efficient PV dispatch problem while taking three different objective functions into account. The first objective function corresponds to the minimization of the operational costs with respect to the energy purchasing costs at terminals of the substation, including the maintenance costs of the PV sources. The second objective function is the reduction of the expected daily energy losses regarding all resistive effects of the distribution lines. The third objective function concerns the minimization of the total emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere by the substation bus or its equivalent (diesel generator). These objective functions are minimized using a single-objective optimization approach through the application of the Salp Swarm Algorithm (SSA), which is combined with a matrix hourly power flow formulation that works by using a leader–follower operation scheme. Two test feeders composed of 27 and 33 nodes set for standalone and grid-connected operation are used in the numerical validations. The standalone grid corresponds to an adaptation of the generation and demand curves for the municipality of Capurganá, and the grid-connected system is adapted to the operating conditions in the metropolitan area of Medellín, i.e., a rural area and a major city in Colombia. A numerical comparison with three additional combinatorial optimizers (i.e., particle swarm optimization (PSO), the multiverse optimizer (MVO), and the crow search algorithm (CSA)) demonstrates the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed leader–follower optimization approach to the optimal management of PV generation sources in DC grids while considering different objective function indices.
This paper addresses the optimal power flow problem in direct current (DC) networks employing a master–slave solution methodology that combines an optimization algorithm based on the multiverse theory (master stage) and the numerical method of successive approximation (slave stage). The master stage proposes power levels to be injected by each distributed generator in the DC network, and the slave stage evaluates the impact of each power configuration (proposed by the master stage) on the objective function and the set of constraints that compose the problem. In this study, the objective function is the reduction of electrical power losses associated with energy transmission. In addition, the constraints are the global power balance, nodal voltage limits, current limits, and a maximum level of penetration of distributed generators. In order to validate the robustness and repeatability of the solution, this study used four other optimization methods that have been reported in the specialized literature to solve the problem addressed here: ant lion optimization, particle swarm optimization, continuous genetic algorithm, and black hole optimization algorithm. All of them employed the method based on successive approximation to solve the load flow problem (slave stage). The 21- and 69-node test systems were used for this purpose, enabling the distributed generators to inject 20%, 40%, and 60% of the power provided by the slack node in a scenario without distributed generation. The results revealed that the multiverse optimizer offers the best solution quality and repeatability in networks of different sizes with several penetration levels of distributed power generation.
This document presents a master–slave methodology for solving the problem of optimal operation of photovoltaic (PV) distributed generators (DGs) in direct current (DC) networks. This problem was modeled using a nonlinear programming model (NLP) that considers the minimization of three different objective functions in a daily operation of the system. The first one corresponds to the minimization of the total operational cost of the system, including the energy purchasing cost to the conventional generators and maintenance costs of the PV sources; the second objective function corresponds to the reduction of the energy losses associated with the transport of energy in the network, and the third objective function is related to the minimization of the total emissions of CO2 by the conventional generators installed on the DC grid. The minimization of these objective functions is achieved by using a master–slave optimization approach through the application of the Vortex Search algorithm combined with a matrix hourly power flow. To evaluate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed approach, two test scenarios were used, which correspond to a grid-connected and a standalone network located in two different regions of Colombia. The grid-connected system emulates the behavior of the solar resource and power demand of the city of Medellín-Antioquia, and the standalone network corresponds to an adaptation of the generation and demand curves for the municipality of Capurganá-Choco. A numerical comparison was performed with four optimization methodologies reported in the literature: particle swarm optimization, multiverse optimizer, crow search algorithm, and salp swarm algorithm. The results obtained demonstrate that the proposed optimization approach achieved excellent solutions in terms of response quality, repeatability, and processing times.
This article reviews the main methodologies employed for the optimal location, sizing, and operation of Distributed Generators (DGs) and Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) in electrical networks. For such purpose, we first analyzed the devices that comprise a microgrid (MG) in an environment with Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and their modes of operation. Following that, we examined the planning and operation of each DER considered in this study (DGs and ESSs). Finally, we addressed the joint integration of DGs and ESSs into MGs. From this literature review, we were able to identify both the objective functions and constraints that are most commonly used to formulate the problem of the optimal integration and operation of DGs and ESSs in MGs. Moreover, this review allowed us to identify the methodologies that have been employed for such integration, as well as the current needs in the field. With this information, the purpose is to develop new mathematical formulations and approaches for the optimal integration and operation of DERs into MGs that provide financial and operational benefits.
Due to the the lack of information about parameters in the datasheets of photovoltaic (PV) panels, it is difficult to study their modeling because PV behavior is based on voltage–current (V-I) data, which present a highly nonlinear relationship. To solve this difficulty, this study presents a mathematical three-diode model of a PV panel that includes multiple unknown parameters: photoinduced current, saturation currents of the three diodes, three ideality factors, serial resistance, and parallel resistance. These parameters should be estimated in the three-diode model of a PV panel to obtain the actual values that represent the voltage–current profile or the voltage–power profile (because of its visual simplicity) of the PV panel under analysis. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes a new application of the salp swarm algorithm (SSA) to estimate the parameters of a three-diode model of a PV panel. Two test scenarios were implemented with two different PV panels, i.e., Kyocera KC200GT and Solarex MSX60, which generate different power levels and are widely used for commercial purposes. The results of the simulations were obtained using different irradiance levels. The proposed PV model was evaluated based on the experimental results of the PV modules analyzed in this paper. The efficiency of the optimization technique proposed here, i.e., SSA, was measured by a fair comparison between its numerical results and those of other optimization techniques tuned to obtain the best response in terms of the objective function.
