The use of water for irrigation is affected by meteorological variables that in turn are affected by changes in climate. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential impact of climate change on irrigation management in the papaya and in Conilon coffee, grown respectively in Linhares and Jaguaré in the State of Espírito Santo (ES). Average monthly data of temperature and precipitation for the current climate were used, with model ECHAM5 MPI-OM data, available from the IPCC, used for future projections. The water balance was carried out for irrigation as per Pereira et al. (2002) considering the period of 1980 for the current climate, and 2020, 2050 and 2080 for future climate projections. Reference evapotranspiration was calculated using the Thornthwaite method. According to the data, the changes in climate should result in an increase in irrigation depth for coffee and papaya by 2080 of around 138% and 160% respectively. The increase in temperature and reduction in precipitation should cause increases in the water requirements of the crops. Climate change is therefore likely to increase the consumption of water for irrigation, which may affect the availability of water resources for the population, unless mitigating measures are adopted.
