Both steels have been used in extreme conditions where high strength and toughness are needed. The understanding of the weldability of high-strength low-alloy steels and ultra-high strength steels has been the subject of particular interest. This study aims to evaluate and compare the microstructure and mechanical strength of class 4340 and 300M steel sheets after laser welding and heat treatment. Annealing was carried out at 400°C for 2 hours and surface plasma nitriding at 500ºC during 3 hours. The results showed welds with high hardness and small heat affected zones. It was also observed that 300M steel presented cracks at the surface after plasma nitriding, leading to premature rupture of the specimens. It was concluded that the laser welding and the treatments for the 300M and 4340 steels are viable, with retention of high tensile strength.
