O ensino de inglês em São Paulo, apesar de contar com uma sólida tradição histórica, ainda hoje não acontece de maneira satisfatória nas escolas regulares, sobretudo as da rede pública. Diante dessa dificuldade, a presente pesquisa buscou, com a análise do discurso, investigar as representações que sujeitos-alunos da 5ª série e do 3º ano do Ensino Médio fazem sobre o aprender inglês na escola pública. Para tanto, foram feitas entrevistas com alguns alunos e elas constituem o corpus da pesquisa. Partindo de uma perspectiva discursiva, que entende a língua como um fenômeno histórico, ideológico e social, iniciamos a pesquisa com uma contextualização histórica do ensino público. Nesse primeiro momento, um espaço de memória foi delineado, trazendo a trajetória de um ensino marcado por restrições, improvisos e ausência de qualidade. Assumindo essa memória que constitui o ensino público no Brasil, foram analisados os dizeres dos alunos com o intuito de compreender suas representações sobre a possibilidade de se aprender inglês na escola. Inicialmente encontramos duas representações dominantes: a escola como espaço onde se aprende bastante inglês e escola como espaço onde o ensino não acontece. Essas representações, que inicialmente pareciam opostas, alcançaram um ponto de chegada bastante semelhante devido ao efeito da memória e à capacidade de deslizamento dos significados. Assim, a representação da escola pública como local da não aprendizagem foi identificada como parte de uma formação discursiva predominante. Prosseguindo a análise, focalizamos o olhar nos dizeres sobre o gostar de inglês e, nesse momento, a heterogeneidade discursiva apontou para um sujeito descentralizado que, atravessado pelo inconsciente, construía afirmações conflituosas que estavam de acordo com as representações e memórias que ele trazia da escola. Assim, admitindo os sentidos como elementos históricos que são reconstruídos nos dizeres pela força da memória, concluímos que a representação da escola como espaço onde o ensino não acontece é um "já-dito" que constitui uma posição ideológica determinante nos processos de representação do aprender inglês na escola pública regular.
