Objective: To understand the incidence of neuropathic pain (DN), in the chronic spinal cord injury (SCI) patients, as there is little information in this regard. Design: A prospective, randomized study. Participants: It was performed with 245 patients with SCI in chronic phase to determine the incidence of neuropathic pain. Interventions: DN4 test evaluated neurophatic pain. Results: The sample was 95 patients, 67% men and 33% women, with an average age ϮSD of 42.91Ϯ16.6 years. The time since evolution of SCI was 98.3 months (range, 15-360mo). The proportion of patients with American Spinal Injury Association grade A was 50%. The prevalence of DN was 66.3%. The most common forms of presentation of DN were numbness (55%) and electric shocks (40%). There are correlations between DN with age (Pϭ0.005), but not with sex or the time of evolution of SCI. Conclusions: More than 50% of patients with chronic LM had DN. It is more frequent in the incomplete SCI and it is correlated with age, but not with sex or the time of evolution of the SCI.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
