To comprehend the reproductional success of Impatiens glandulifera in Central Europe, the pollination system was analyzed under field conditions. Impatiens glandulifera attracts a lot of visitors because of its abundant amount of nectar with its high sugar content. The range of visitors, their composition and their changes during the blooming time and their pollen loading capacity were investigated as well as plant and flower morphology, the nectar production, the quantity and viability of pollen, the stigmatic pollen load, the pollen/ovule ratio and the seed production of the neophyte. The visitors, which in Central Europe almost exclusively utilize the nectar, are passively covered with pollen because of the morphology and the mobile suspension of the flowers. Consequently the next landing results in a pollination of I. glandulifera during the female blooming phase. Although the germination rate of the pollen deposited on the stigma is very low, a 100% seed set is readily obtained during the initial visit to a flower in female stage.

Sixty-six yeast strains isolated from the nectar of various plant species in Central Europe were characterized by randomly amplified polymorphic DNA PCR (RAPD-PCR) and by sequencing of the variable D1/D2 domain of large-subunit (26S) rDNA. The usefulness of both methods for the determination and comparison of unknown ascomycetous and basidiomycetous yeast strains was compared and evaluated. The reproducibility of RAPD-PCR was shown to be low and the information obtained by this method was clearly not as precise as that obtained from sequence analysis. Numerous imponderables make RAPD-PCR analysis unreliable, at least as a means of identifying yeasts in ecological studies. The lack of standard protocols for RAPD-PCR analysis and the absence of a general database of banding patterns made it impossible to identify unknown yeast strains or to recognize new species. In contrast to RAPD-PCR, sequence analysis of the D1/D2 domain was found to be a fast and reliable method for the rapid identification of yeast species and was also shown to be an invaluable tool for the discovery of new species.

The labial gland secretions from males of the bumblebee Bombus (Separatobombus) griseocollis De Geer, a bumblebee exhibiting perching behaviour, were analysed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) in the electron impact and positive ion chemical ionization mode. The major compound of the complex mixture of alkenols, acetates, hydrocarbons, wax type esters and steroids is tetradecyl acetate, considerable amounts of hexadecyl, geranyllinaloyl, geranylgeranyl, docosyl, tetracosenyl and hexacosenyl acetate were also found. 1,3-Tetradecanediol diacetate, detected as a minor component, has not yet been identified in male bumblebee labial gland secretions. Besides small amounts of primary alcohols (tetradecanol and hexadecanol) the tertiary alcohol geranyllinalool (3,7,11,15-tetramethyl-hexadeca-1,6,10,14-tetraene-3-ol) was also present. The primary alcohols were also present as esters of butanoic, dodecanoic, tetradecanoic, and hexadecanoic acid. Besides the usual mixture of un-and mono-unsaturated straight chain hydrocarbons, the labial gland contains the isoprenoid hydrocarbons -springene [(6E,10E)-7,11,15-trimethyl-3-methylenehexadeca-1,6,10,14-tetraene] and two isomers of α-springene [(3Z,6E,10E)-and (3E,6E,10E)-3,7,11,15-tetramethyl-hexadeca-1,3,6,10,14-pentaene]. The close relationship in chemical composition in male bumblebees with perching and flight pass behaviour is discussed.

Based on corresponding ascocarp ontogeny and thallus structure, the genera Euopsis and Harpidium are included in the family Lichinaceae. In the two species of Euopsis, E. granatina and E. pulvinata, the apothecia develop from ascogonia in generative tissue, while in H. rutilans they are pycnoascocarps. In thallus anatomy, the species of Euopsis resemble Pyrenopsis haematopsis and allied species, while H. rutilans corresponds in structure and development of the thallus and apothecia to Pyrenopsis haemaleella (syn. P. sphinctotricha). H. rutilans is the first member of Lichinaceae known to have only a green algal symbiont. In E. granatina, two phycobionts are always present, a species of Gloeocapsa and a chlorococcalean alga. In Euopsis and Harpidium, the ascus wall is composed of an outer, non‐expansible and an inner, expansible layer; the latter surrounds the protoplast as an amyloid collar, which expands during spore release into a long, tapering rostrum. In Euopsis, the outer wall layer is strongly amyloid and the upper part separated from the expanded amyloid rostrum by a non‐amyloid zone, appearing like a slit in LM studies. The ultrastructure and function of the ascus in E. granatina has been studied in TEM and is interpreted as functionally unitunicate‐rostrate. Unitunicate asci with short rostrum are described for P. haemaleella and P. haematopsis.
