Within the last few yea rs, researchers have show n a renewed interest in "interest ", Especially in the fi eld of educational psychology many studies ha ve been conducted to ana lyze ho w learning and achie vem ent are infl uenced by motivational and cognitive fa ctors . which are connected with individual and/or situational interests. In this paper. results from empirical resear ch will be present ed besides theoretical considerations concerning the interest-construct. Interest . has typ ically been st udi ed as an independent variable. Dependent va riables have been eithe r so me aspect s of learn ing o utc ome (knowledge structure, academic achievement) or hypothetical mediators. which probably can be used to explain the interest effects (e.g., learning strategies, attention. emotional experiences). There is also a growing numb er of st udies whic h try to exp lore the condi tions of int er est development within educational settings. Future lines ofresearch will be discussed in light of the demands ofeducational theory and practice.
