Zur Untersuchung der Luftverunreinigungen über dem Boden wurde eine Probenahmetechnik, bei der Luft mit flüssigem Stickstoff einkondensiert wird, sowie eine gas‐chromatographische Analysenmethode entwickelt. Mit Hilfe eines Fesselballons wurden Luftproben aus 100 bis 500 m Höhe über dem Werksgelände der Chemischen Werke Hüls genommen und auf C2− bis C6− Kohlenwasserstoffe, Methylchlorid und Vinylchlorid bis in den ppb‐Bereich untersucht. Menge und Art der erfaßten Komponenten hängen stark von der Windrichtung ab. Mit steigender Höhe nimmt die mittlere Konzentration der meisten erfaßten Verunreinigungen ab. Dabei vermindert sich die Konzentration auf etwa die Hälfte, wenn die Höhe um 200 m zunimmt, wobei die beobachteten Differenzen jedoch nicht statistisch gesichert sind.
