Aim A better understanding of the processes driving local species richness and of the scales at which they operate is crucial for conserving biodiversity in cultivated landscapes. Local species richness may be controlled by ecological processes acting at larger spatial scales. Very little is known about the effect of landscape variables on soil biota. The aim of our study was to partly fill this gap by relating the local variation of surface-dwelling macroarthropod species richness to factors operating at the habitat scale (i.e. land use and habitat characteristics) and the landscape scale (i.e. composition of the surrounding matrix).Location An agricultural landscape with a low-input farming system in Central Hesse, Germany.Methods We focused on five taxa significantly differing in mobility and ecological requirements: ants, ground beetles, rove beetles, woodlice, and millipedes. Animals were caught with pitfall traps in fields of different land use (arable land, grassland, fallow land) and different habitat conditions (insolation, soil humidity). Composition of the surrounding landscape was analysed within a radius of 250 m around the fields. ResultsFactors from both scales together explained a large amount of the local variation in species richness, but the explanatory strength of the factors differed significantly among taxa. Land use particularly affected ground beetles and woodlice, whereas ants and rove beetles were more strongly affected by habitat characteristics, namely by insolation and soil characteristics. Local species richness of diplopods depended almost entirely on the surrounding landscape. In general, the composition of the neighbouring landscape had a lower impact on the species richness of most soil macroarthropod taxa than did land use and habitat characteristics. Main conclusionsWe conclude that agri-environment schemes for the conservation of biodiversity in cultivated landscapes have to secure management for both habitat quality and heterogeneous landscape mosaics.

Changing species assemblages represent major challenges to ecosystems around the world. Retracing these changes is limited by our knowledge of past biodiversity. Natural history collections represent archives of biodiversity and are therefore an unparalleled source to study biodiversity changes. In the present study, we tested the value of natural history collections for reconstructing changes in the abundance and presence of species over time. In total, we scrutinized 17 080 quality-checked records for 242 epibenthic invertebrate species from the North and Baltic Seas collected throughout the last 200 years. Our approaches identified eight previously reported species introductions, 10 range expansions, six of which are new to science, as well as the long-term decline of 51 marine invertebrate species. The cross-validation of our results with published accounts of endangered species and neozoa of the area confirmed the results for two of the approaches for 49 to 55% of the identified species, and contradicted our results for 9 to 10%. The results based on relative record trends were less validated. We conclude that, with the proper approaches, natural history collections are an unmatched resource for recovering early species introductions and declines.

Desertoniscus schmalfussi n. sp. is described, D. taschkentensis (Verhoeff, 1930) formerly considered as Protracheonis-cus taschkentensis is redescribed and a lectotype is designated, and their diagnostic characters are figured. Desertoniscusschmalfussi n. sp. differs from all other species of the genus in having long setae on the apex of the male pleopod endopodite I and in having male pereiopod VII carpus with a distinct ridge on the dorsal margin.

SeSam wurde vom Forschungsinstitut Senckenberg als zentrales Sammlungsmanagementsystem entwickelt. Das System ist für alle Sammlungen konzipiert, unabhängig davon ob sie zoologische oder botanische, rezente oder fossile Stücke enthalten. Durch gemeinsame Beschreibungselemente wird eine einheitliche Erfassung sichergestellt. Durch die webbasierte Architektur von SeSam ist zur Eingabe und Abfrage von Daten lediglich ein Webbrowser erforderlich.
