A tanulmány célja azoknak a legfontosabb statisztikai adatoknak és korábbi kutatások alapján tett megállapításoknak az áttekintése, amelyek alapjaiban határozzák meg az idősödő társadalom egyre szélesebb értelemben vett problémahalmazának megértését, s amelyek nélkül a jelen kutatási program során kapott eredmények sem értelmezhetők. Az áttekintés kiterjed a demográfiai, társadalmi (egyéni és háztartási), gazdasági (foglalkoztatási és jövedelmi) trendekre, az oktatás és képzés helyzetére, valamint az idősek szociális környezetére is, de a befogadó információs társadalom megteremtésére irányuló kezdeményezésekre nem tér ki.
Az idősek kapcsolati hálózatának elemzése csak mostanában kerül a kapcsolathálózat-elemzők és társadalmi tőke kutatók érdeklődésének homlokterébe. Újabb elemzések empirikusan is bizonyították azt a mindannyiunk által jól ismert jelenséget, hogy a kor előrehaladtával mind mennyiségileg, mind minőségileg átalakul a kapcsolatháló és a különböző típusú erőforrásokhoz hálózatokon keresztül megvalósuló hozzáférés. E tanulmány szerzője a kapcsolatháló beszűkülésének, átrendeződésének az idősek hálózati társadalomba való bekapcsolódását megnehezítő következményeit vizsgálja. Megállapítja, hogy az idősek az erőforrásoktól megfosztott csoportokra jellemző szubkulturális sajátosságokat mutatnak, amennyiben zárt kapcsolati és kommunikációs hálózatuk elszigeteli őket más társadalmi csoportoktól. Az elszigeteltség, a zárt hálózati struktúra egyszerre oka és következménye annak, hogy az idősek bekapcsolódása az információs társadalomba rendkívül lassú folyamatnak bizonyul.
A cikk a TÁRKI Társadalomkutatási Intézet által végzett adatfelvételre támaszkodva elemzi az időskorú magyar lakosság aktivitásának mutatóit, és egy magyarázó modell segítségével vizsgálja bizonyos tényezők hatását az idős állampolgároknak az IKT eszközökhöz fűződő viszonyára. Fő megállapítása, hogy az idősek fizikai, szellemi és társas aktivitása jelentősen befolyásolja az infokommunikációs eszközök iránti attitűdjük alakulását. Különösen erős a szellemi aktivitás hatása az IKT alkalmazására.
