This research aims at demonstrating that wayfinding solutions can improve the effectiveness of the evacuation processes in complex architectural spaces such as those of cruise ships. We investigated the behaviours of passengers in maritime disaster to figure out whether people act similarly during buildings egress and ships evacuation. Data were collected through questionnaires administered in 2015 to passengers boarding various cruise ships at the port of Ancona (Italy), and through the analysis of real footage of the evacuation of the Costa Concordia. The open source software Fire Dynamics Simulator with Evacuation (FDS+EVAC), used in building egress analyses, was adapted to include these behavioural and event information such as familiarity with ship layout, ship rotation and lifeboats boarding. Simulation results on the case study confirmed similarities between ships and buildings evacuations, underlining the effectiveness of wayfinding solutions to improve passengers' evacuation flows and routes selection. This study also demonstrated that computer simulation could benefit the ship design process, the preparation of safety guidelines, and the crewmembers during naval emergency management training.

Students'mobililty has grown considerably in the last decades and student housing has recently started to be studied more consistently, because of the high pressure on the private market. However, its implication for policy making and societal resilience remains a marginal topic in the scientific debate and further studies are needed to meet the goals of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. Students could be seen as a vulnerable category to be considered to understand and reduce disaster risk, and to develop tailored strategies for the mitigation of human losses. In this paper, we investigate which factors influence university students' decision to rent a room with a focus on risk perception and safety awareness. The research focuses on a case study in Ancona, Central Italy, where we surveyed 338 students of the University of Ancona, which shares similar characteristics with the 2009 precursor in L'Aquila. Our results highlight that safety is not the paramount factor influencing students' choice for an accommodation and that not all the students were able to define the risk level of the city they live in. On the contrary, students considered the rent as the most important factor influencing their choices, followed by the proximity of the accommodation to services. The discussion points out that decision makers must integrate vulnerability reduction strategies on student housing plans at three different level, especially education and awareness strategies. The conclusions suggest some priorities to be undertaken in policies, define limitations and open questions to be addressed in future researches.

When a disaster exceeds the capacity of the affected country to cope with its own resources, the provision of external rescue and health services is required, and the deployment of relief units requested. Recently, the cost of international relief and the belief that such deployment is cost-effective has been questioned by the international community; unfortunately, there is still little informed debate and few detailed data are available. This paper presents the results of a comparative review on the cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA) of search and rescue (SAR) and Emergency Medical Team (EMT) deployment. The aim of this work is to provide an overview of the topic, highlight the criteria used to assess the effectiveness, and identify gaps in existing literature. The results show that both deployments are highly expensive, and their success is strongly related to the time they need to be operational; SAR deployments are characterized by limited outcomes in terms of lives saved, and EMTs by insufficient data and lack of detailed assessment. This research highlights that the criteria used to assess the effectiveness need to be explored further, considering different purposes, lengths of stay, and different activities performed, especially for any comparison. This study concludes that data reporting should be mandatory for humanitarian response agencies.

Closed university buildings proved to be one of the main hot spots for virus transmission during pandemics. As shown during the COVID-19 pandemic, physical distancing is one of the most effective measures to limit such transmission. As universities prepare to manage in-class activities, students’ adherence to physical distancing requirements is a priority topic. Unfortunately, while physical distancing in classrooms can be easily managed, the movement of students inside common spaces can pose high risk of close proximity. This paper provides an experimental analysis of unidirectional student movement inside a case-study university building to investigate how physical distancing requirements impact student movement and grouping behaviour. Results show general adherence with the minimum required physical distancing guidance, but spaces such as corridors pose higher risk of exposure than doorways. Doorway width, in combination with group behaviour, affect the students' capacity to keep the recommended physical distance. Furthermore, questionnaire results show that students report higher perceived vulnerability while moving along corridors. Evidence-based results can support decision-makers in understanding individuals’ exposure to COVID-19 in universities and researchers in developing behavioural models in preparation of future outbreaks and pandemics.
