Tout gamin, sur les bancs de la communale du Telagh, en Algérie, Alain Mimoun, l’athlète français le plus médaillé de France, tombe amoureux de la France. Il s’engage en 1939 à dix-huit ans à peine pour connaître la mère patrie, « la plus belle fille du monde ». Et c’est la guerre ! Décoré de la Croix de guerre, ayant reçu la médaille militaire à titre exceptionnel, il est démobilisé en 1946. Deux ans plus tard, il est médaillé olympique sur dix mille mètres et c’est en combattant, « avec les moyens du bord », qu’au cours des années 1950 il arrachera titres nationaux, européens, mondiaux, jusqu’à remporter furieusement le marathon olympique à Melbourne en 1956. Comme si la guerre n’avait été qu’une longue et douloureuse préparation physique et morale à endurer, à aller jusqu’au bout de ses forces, pour la France !
Il y a des héroïsmes sans héros. Obscurs ! Pour que des héros, fictifs ou réels, émergent dans une collectivité, il doit exister une entreprise d’héroïsation : portée par des mythes, par des idéologies, il lui faut répondre à une demande sociale et culturelle. Cela suppose des instances publiques ou privées productrices de récits. Pas de héros sans discours ! Aujourd’hui, l’offre des armées est pauvre, alors qu’existe une demande d’épique, y compris parmi les jeunes générations. Pourtant, les ressources en actes héroïques accomplis par nos soldats ne font pas défaut. Encore faut-il que les organismes qui ont en charge le rapport du militaire à la société s’y intéressent, les recueillent et en fassent des offres sur le marché de la création artistique et littéraire : tout un appareil de production actualisant le héros militaire est à réinventer. Aujourd’hui, alors que la visibilité et l’audience du soldat dans l’espace national posent problème, cette entreprise d’héroïsation du métier des armes est plus que jamais nécessaire.
L’humour chez les soldats n’a rien d’anecdotique ; ce n’est pas un épiphénomène, c’est un trait prégnant de la culture militaire française. La plaisanterie, le jeu de mots, la caricature, le canular ne sont pas hors sol. Ces attitudes remplissent explicitement ou non une fonction sociale, voire politique ou psychologique, jusqu’à devenir un principe de vie.
