Publicado em 1924, O Pandemônio de 1918 traduziu o ponto de vista de do médico Moncorvo Filho, vinculado ao movimento higienista, a respeito da pandemia da gripe espanhola. Entendia que a maneira de superar as mazelas sociais e conduzir o país ao progresso, estaria relacionada ao combate às doenças como a tuberculose, o alcoolismo e a mortalidade infantil, o que o levou a mobilizar esforços para criar o Instituto de Proteção e Assistência à Infância (IPAI). O autor mostra como agiu em torno da manifestação da gripe espanhola, a partir de uma perspectiva intervencionista, compromissada em curar a doença e ensinar práticas de higiene aos indivíduos para que pudessem evitá-la. Problematizar como sua escrita relata a pandemia, além de interpretar como ele estava inserido num movimento comprometido em pensar uma medicina articulada a preceitos pedagógicos de higiene, é o horizonte deste texto.
