IntroduçãoUm dos pilares da Geografia é a análise espacial, que utiliza ferramentas provenientes do desenvolvimento tecnológico em estudos sobre o território. Com objetivo de organizar informações espaciais, foram desenvolvidos os Sistemas de Informações Geográficas (SIGs), termo utilizado para sistemas que tratam dados geográficos. Os SIGs são baseados em linguagem matemática e responsáveis por desenvolver ferramentas de análise espacial. A inserção de conceitos geográficos, geodésicos, estatísticos e cartográficos, em um SIG, facilita a integração de informações espaciais provenientes de dados cartográficos, imagens de satélite e modelos numéricos, oferecendo mecanismos de combinação dessas informações por meio de algoritmos de manipulação, análise e consulta, que resultam na organização de diversas bases. Os SIGs unificam informações e dados espaciais e possibilitam uma análise integrada, mostrando ser uma ferramenta com grande potencial para planejar e gerir o território 1,2,3,4 .Os SIGs também possuem bancos de dados, que armazenam dados alfanuméricos e informações geográficas. Essa é a principal diferença entre um banco de dados convencional e um banco de dados geográficos, que podem ser utilizados para consultas espaciais sobre determinados elementos 4 .A partir da década de 1990, com o desenvolvimento da internet, diversas aplicações foram testadas e desenvolvidas com o objetivo de disseminar informações geográficas, e os bancos de dados geográficos passaram a ser compartilhados na internet.
