Palavras-chave: efeito materno, leitegada, modelo animal, REML, suíno Genetic Parameters Estimation on Swine Reproductive TraitsABSTRACT -With the objective to estimate genetic and phenotypic parameters of swine reproductive traits, litter weight at birth (PLN), litter weight at 21 days (PL21), litter size at birth (TLN), litter size at weaning (TLD) and mortality rate (TM) data of three swine breeds, Duroc, Landrace and Large White were used. The genetic and phenotypic (co)variances were estimated by Restricted Maximum Likelihood (REML) method. These components were used to estimate the direct ( h ) heritabilities, the common litter effect (c 2 ), and the genetic and phenotypic correlations. The direct, maternal and total heritability estimates were small to medium, 0.00 to 0.17, 0.00 to 0.14 and 0.00 to 0.15, respectively, indicating the necessity to include information on relatives in selection programs to improve these traits. The correlations among the additive direct and maternal genetic effects were, in general, high and negative, evidencing antagonism among these effects. The estimates of c2 were, in general, low, for all traits and breeds. The genetic correlations among PLN, PL21, TLN and TLD tended to be high and positive, and the correlations between these traits and TM were positive in some cases, and negative in others.
Palavras-chave: BLUP, características reprodutivas, suínos, tendências genéticas Genetic Trends for Maternal and Direct Genetic Effects on Reproductive Traits of SwineABSTRACT -Data of Duroc, Landrace and Large White swine were used to estimate genetic trends for maternal and direct genetic effects of litter size (TLN) and litter weight (PLN) born alive, litter size (TLD) and litter weight (PL21) at 21 days and mortality rate (TM). The genetic parameters were estimated by restricted maximum likelihood (REML) method. Estimated genetic direct and maternal trends were obtained by regressing genetic values averages on dam birth year. Estimated genetic direct trends showed no progress or very small progress for litter traits, being these progresses, in some cases, even negatives (-0.0382 to 0.0756 kg in PLN, -0.1119 to 0.1118 kg in PL21, -0.0031 to 0.0509 pigs in TLN, -0.0217 to 0.0084 pigs in TLD and 0.0997 to -0.0059% in TM), showing the difficulty to get high genetic gain in reproductive traits. These results showed the importance of considering relationships informations, in order to obtain higher selection gain for these traits. Estimated genetic maternal trends were, in general, negatives, possibly in function of negative genetic correlations among direct and maternal genetic additive effect.
Estimação de Parâmetros Genéticos em Palavras-chave: parâmetros genéticos, REML, suíno Estimation of Genetic Parameters on Performance Traits of Large White, Landrace and Duroc Swine BreedsABSTRACT -Large White (LW), Landrace (LD) and Duroc (DU) swine data were used to estimate the variance components for adjusted weight at 70-days of age (AW70), average daily gain (ADG) and backfat thickness (BT). The (co) variance components were estimated by the restricted maximum likelihood (REML) method. These components were used to calculate the estimates of heritabilities; common litter effect; and genetic, common litter and residual correlations. The heritability values ranged from medium to high, indicating the possibility of genetic gains by selection. The genetic correlations between AW70 and ADG (LW = 0.46; LD = 0.08; and DU = -0.47) and between AW70 and BT (LW = 0.48; LD = 0.31; and DU = 0.47) indicate that a pre-selection performed when pigs are 70-days of age can affect selection for ADG and BT. Correlations between ADG and BT (LW = 0.31; LD = 0.33; and DU = 0.02) indicate the necessity to work with multivariate methodologies or procedures to select these traits in genetic improvement programs.
Palavras-chave: BLUP, suíno, tendência genética Genetic Trends in Performance Traits of Large White, Landrace and Duroc Swine BreedsABSTRACT -Data of Large White (LW), Landrace (LD) and Duroc (DU) swine were used to estimate the genetic trends for adjusted weight at 70-days old (AW70) in kg, average daily gain (ADG) in g and backfat thickness (BT) in cm. The genetic trends were estimated by regression of the averages of trait genetic values in function of the animal birth year. The estimates of the genetic trend for AW70 (LW = -0.22; LD = -0.24; DU = -0.57) were negative, possibly due to a greater emphasis given in the selection process for ADG and BT and to the correlations between these traits. The estimates of the genetic trend for ADG (LW = 14.11; LD = 9.81; DU = 2.75) and BT (LW = -0.07; LD = -0.05; DU = -0.04) are in accordance with the objectives of the genetic program and with the existing correlation between these traits as well.
Neoleucinodes elegantalis (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) is one of the major pests of solanaceous plants in South America. It is considered a great threat by the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization due to the serious economic damage that it causes on tomato farms; therefore, controlling this pest is a challenging task in South America. Controlling N. elegantalis at the egg stage is the best way to prevent it from damaging crops; however, thorough studies about the effectiveness of chemicals on the different life stages of this insect pest are lacking. In this study, the effects of different chemical classes were evaluated on N. elegantalis adults, female oviposition behavior, larvae, eggs, and embryonic development. None of the tested insecticides demonstrated toxicity to the adults; however, the results showed that cartap hydrochloride affects oviposition behavior. Moreover, methomyl and cartap hydrochloride exhibited high toxicity against the eggs and larvae, with higher than 80% of mortality. These insecticides interrupted larval hatching and caused alterations in the chorion layer. Flubendiamide and deltamethrin demonstrated toxicity on N. elegantalis larvae; however, lufenuron, indoxacarb, methoxyfenozide, and chlorantraniliprole demonstrated low toxicity on both eggs and larvae, with lower than 70% of mortality. Fruit treated with cartap hydrochloride had a deterrent effect. The ovicidal activity revealed by methomyl and cartap hydrochloride might provide new approaches regarding insecticide effects on eggs. Methomyl, cartap hydrochloride, flubendiamide, and deltamethrin demonstrated toxicity on larvae. The evaluation of the chorion of the eggshell in this study has clarified the toxic effect of methomyl and cartap hydrochloride on eggs.
