O Grupo Itararé consiste em um espesso conjunto de rochas permocarboníferas aflorantes por uma área de cerca de 15 mil km2 no segundo planalto paranaense. Contudo, nos mapas geológicos existentes a unidade é tratada como indivisa apesar da sua grande heterogeneidade litológica. Visando preencher essa lacuna de conhecimento, o presente trabalho apresenta a subdivisão inédita do Grupo Itararé e sua cartografia na escala 1:600.000 em toda a faixa de afloramentos no Paraná. Quatro formações, três membros e cinco unidades informais foram individualizadas e mapeadas. A Formação Lagoa Azul é a mais antiga, constitui-se de depósitos glaciais continentais e repousa sobre o substrato pré-Itararé, onde são comuns formas erosivas produzidas pelo gelo. Acima da anterior repousa a Formação Campo do Tenente, que inclui o arenito Vila Velha e fácies de folhelho, ritmito e diamictito formadas em ambiente aquático de água salobra com influência glacial. A Formação Campo Mourão repousa em discordância sobre as unidades subjacentes, é dominantemente arenosa e inclui unidades areníticas informais tais como os arenitos Lapa, Pedra Alta e Barreiro. A influência glacial nessa formação é sutil e sua deposição ocorreu em ambientes desde fluviais até marinhos. A Formação Taciba, unidade mais jovem, é composta pelos membros Rio Segredo, Chapéu do Sol e Rio do Sul que, respectivamente, são caracterizados pelo predomínio de arenito, diamictito e fácies heterolíticas. A sedimentação dessa unidade registra ambientes glacio-marinhos rasos e profundos. As relações estratigráficas observadas em campo aliadas a dados bioestratigráficos e geocronológicos de trabalhos anteriores permitem posicionar o Grupo Itararé entre o Viseano e o Sakmariano, totalizando amplitude temporal de 43 Ma.
