A representação de abelhas eussociais, ao contrário das abelhas solitárias, é alta dentro da apifauna tropical como um todo e presumivelmente evoluiu como parte integrante da biota tropical (ROUBIK, 1989). Uma hipótese que tenta explicar a predominância de abelhas eussociais nas regiões equatoriais é de que a exaustão das fontes de alimento pelas colônias populosas de abelhas sociais seria o principal fator da diminuição de riqueza de abelhas solitárias nos trópicos (MICHENER, 1979). Na classificação atual, a antiga sub-família Meliponinae passou a ser a tribo Meliponini da subfamília Apinae, sendo dividida em subtribos Meliponina, com 1 gênero, e Trigonina, demais gêneros (MICHENER, 2007). As colônias da subtribo Meliponina se caracterizam pela entrada dos ninhos que se localizam no centro de uma estrutura feita de geoprópolis (argila e resina vegetal), crateriforme e raiada e por não construírem células reais, como visto na Figura 2 (NOGUEIRA- NETO, 1997) Todas as rainhas, operárias e machos se desenvolvem até o estágio adulto em células de cria de mesmo tamanho. Diferentemente das abelhas do gênero Apis que alimentam suas larvas com geleia real para formarem rainhas, a determinação da casta real em abelhas sem-ferrão é genética (KERR, 1946). A subtribo Trigonina é um grupo mais diversificado, possuindo dezenas de gêneros. Com raras exceções, constróem células reais que são maiores que as outras de onde surgem as rainhas.Como pode ser visto na Figura 2, a entrada das colméias são construídas com cera e em forma de canudo (NOGUEIRA-NETO, 1997).Figura 2. Na Europa, a Apis mellifera é considerada o 3º animal doméstico de maior importância econômica (TAUTZ, 2010). No Brasil, a importância das abelhas sem ferrão vai além dos aspectos sociais e econômicos, levando-se em conta principalmente os serviços ecológicos prestados (SILVA; DA PAZ, 2012) .
