Using the concept of``community of practice'' and a typology developed by Guile and Griffiths, this article characterizes the quality and the nature of learning students achieved while studying in a newly-implemented pulp and paper vocational program, structured as a co-operative education program and offered by six school boards throughout the province of Quebec, Canada. The observations come from a five-year long action research program involving registered students, trainers in vocational centers, and work supervisors in pulp and paper mills. The conclusion highlights the structural barriers in pulp and paper mills that limit students' access to operations. This co-op education program is traditional according to the Guile and Griffiths' typology.
Pedagogical differentiation is a key to increasing school success. Yet examples of its use in the field are rare, and teachers question its feasibility. It also seems that teachers do not always receive adequate initial training on handling diversity. In this context, a researcher launched a study with 11 elementary school teachers in Québec to [1] understand how practitioners perceive differentiation in the classroom and [2] strengthen courses of action that could support training in this practice. The results suggest that a teacher who differentiates, practices with ideal interdependence and intercomprehension, fostering the explicit recognition, utilization and valuing of diversity, and openness to the legitimacy of a variety of teaching goals and methods. In terms of training, the results suggest that introspective work promotes openness to diversity. They also reveal five pedagogical criteria that can guide the work of the researcher-trainer in an action-training-research process: [1] make knowledge accessible, [2] promote involvement, [3] elicit cognitive dialogue, [4] favour knowledge restructuring and [5] support reflexive activity throughout the research process.
As a way of contributing to better theoretical clarity around the concept of "research-in-partnership" the authors of this article make use of their experiences as researchers involved in research partnerships, to characterize the nature of the links that develop between partners. They identify four functions of research: scholarly/scientific, social, political, and educational functions. They then identify the links that form among partners, viewed through the prism of each of these functions. The theoretical framework of symbolic interactionism underlies these reflections.
