This paper describes a systematic and comprehensive hot-wire investigation into the turbulent statistics of low-, moderate-and high-speed subsonic jets. Experiments were performed to obtain the one-point and two-point statistics of a single-stream, unheated jet turbulence field over a broad region of the jet plume. Results show that hot-wires can be used to measure both the one-point and two-point statistics of the high turbulence intensity, noise-producing regions of unheated, compressible, subsonic jets. For the two-point measurements, probe pairings are performed over the three orthogonal axes. Analysis of the experimental data reveals four main conclusions: (1) both the statistical and joint moments of the turbulence scale well with the local jet shear layer half-width; (2) a simple relationship exists between the statistics of the velocity fluctuations and the square of the velocity fluctuations; (3) a simple relationship exists between the longitudinal and transverse length-scales, and (4) a semi-empirical model has been developed to predict the cross-correlation coefficients, power spectral density, frequencydependent length-scales and coherence decay of the turbulent velocity field. From the second and third conclusions, it is shown that, in the locations near an eddy's centre of rotation (i.e. the midpoint of the jet shear layer), the turbulence statistics can be described as quasi-homogeneous and quasi-frozen. The joint statistical moments, therefore, can be inferred simply from single-point tests. These results will help to develop models for predicting jet mixing noise, highlighting the situations in which the simplifying assumptions are inadequate.
In this work, the open-source spectral/hp element framework Nektar++ (www.nektar.info) is coupled with the Antares library (www.cerfacs.fr/antares/) to predict noise from a subsonic jet. Nektar++ uses the high-order discontinuous Galerkin method to solve the compressible Navier-Stokes equations on unstructured grids. Unresolved turbulent scales are modeled using an implicit Large Eddy Simulation approach. In this approach, the favourable dissipation properties of the discontinuous Galerkin method are used to remove the highest resolved wavenumbers from the solution. For time-integration, an implicit, matrix-free, Newton-Krylov method is used. To compute the far-field noise, Antares solves the Ffowcs Williams -Hawkings equation for a permeable integration surface in the time-domain using a source-time dominant algorithm. The simulation results are validated against experimental data obtained in the Doak Laboratory Flight Jet Rig, located at the University of Southampton.
In this paper, insight is provided into the modelling of single-point and two-point statistics of a subsonic round jet discharged into a moving ambient medium. An experimental campaign has been performed comprising two round, unheated air flows-a central 'jet' at Mach number equal to 0.6 surrounded by a slower 'flight' flow. Constant temperature hot-wire anemometry was used to measure both the axial and radial velocity fluctuations within the turbulent jet flow field. A Mach 0.6 jet was discharged into the flight flow, which ranged from zero up to Mach 0.3. The data show that the degree to which the jet stretches with increasing flight velocity can be discerned with knowledge of the decay of the mean velocity field downstream of the end of the jet's potential core. This stretching factor can then be used to predict the changes
A model-scale experimental investigation of an installed jet–pylon–wing configuration was conducted at the University of Southampton, with the scope to study the effect a pylon has on noise generation and to clarify its impact on the fluctuating wall-pressure load. The set-up consisted of two single-stream nozzles, a baseline axisymmetric annular nozzle and a partially blocked annular pylon nozzle. The nozzles were tested first isolated and then installed next to a NACA4415 aerofoil ‘wing’ at a single nozzle–wing position. The jet Mach number was varied between $0.5 \leq M_{{j}} \leq 0.8$ and measurements were performed both under static and in-flight ambient flow conditions up to ${M_{{f}} = 0.2}$ . The jet flow-field qualification was carried out using a single-velocity-component hot-wire anemometer probe. The pressure field on the wing surface was investigated using two miniature wall-pressure transducers that were flush-mounted in the streamwise and spanwise directions within the pressure side of the wing. A linear ‘flyover’ microphone array was used to record the noise radiated to the far field. The unsteady pressure data were analysed in both time and frequency domains using multi-variate statistics, highlighting a far-field noise reduction provided by the presence of the pylon only in the installed case. Furthermore, the wake field generated behind the pylon is seen to significantly modify the wall-pressure fluctuations, particularly at streamwise locations close to the pylon trailing edge.
