O tabagismo é um dos fatores de risco mais importantes e prevenível, associando-se principalmente a doenças circulatórias, cânceres e doenças respiratórias crônicas. No Brasil, foi instituído em 1989, o Programa Nacional de Controle do Tabagismo (PNCT), tendo como objetivo reduzir a prevalência de fumantes e a morbimortalidade relacionada ao consumo do tabaco. Apesar de se observar melhora no cenário e no comportamento das pessoas, o tabagismo persiste como um problema de saúde pública. Objetiva-se analisar o panorama do tabagismo no Brasil em 10 anos, verificando se a frequência de fumantes sofreu modificação, e consequentemente, se as políticas públicas foram eficazes. Foram analisados dados do relatório Vigitel Brasil 2009 e 2019, disponibilizados pelo Ministério da Saúde, sendo realizada uma análise descritiva e qualitativa dos dados. Em 2009 a frequência de adultos fumantes encontrada foi 15,5%, sendo de 19% no sexo masculino e 12,5% no sexo feminino. A frequência variou de 8% em Aracaju a 22,5% em Porto Alegre. Já em 2019 a frequência de adultos fumantes encontrada foi de 9,8%, sendo de 12,3% no sexo masculino e 7,7% no sexo feminino. A frequência variou de 4,4% em Teresina a 14,6% em Porto Alegre. A frequência de fumantes de 2009 para 2019 sofreu uma redução de 36,77%, apontando para a efetividade do PNCT. Entretanto, o hábito de fumar continua sendo um problema de saúde pública, justificando a necessidade de ampliar e implementar novas ações ao PNCT, para obtenção de resultados mais contundentes.
