In his New astronomy (1609), Johannes Kepler presents a strikingly precise solution to an old astronomical problem: the construction of a mathematical theory for the motion of Mars, the planet whose path was referred to by Pliny the Elder as "very difficult to observe". 1 The New astronomy is divided into five parts, and further divided into 70 chapters. The book was written as an historical report of Kepler's "war on Mars", the astronomer's struggle to derive from the planet's apparent motions its true orbit in the heliocentric system. The narrative of the war on Mars is complex, which might explain why until the second half of the twentieth century the New astronomy was considered to be a hasty publication of Kepler's manuscripts. 2 Scholarly work tended therefore to concentrate on the results, the first two laws of planetary motion, leaving the rhetorical character of the narrative aside and to a large extent neglecting the book's structure. 3 This scenario started to change as Owen Gingerich pointed out that the neat separation of the diverse treatments to which different sets of observations were submitted in the New astronomy could not be found in the manuscripts. 4 Then, in the late 1980s, Bruce Stephenson remarked on the rhetorical character of the New astronomy, commenting that "the book was written and rewritten". 5 William Donahue soon published an article entitled "Kepler's fabricated figures: Covering up the mess in the New astronomy". There he showed that the results presented in the end of chap. 53 were derived by a technique different from that claimed by Kepler, furnishing stronger evidence of a constructed narrative rather than a direct publication of the manuscripts. 6 James Voelkel has further demonstrated that Kepler's correspondence with contemporary astronomers, especially with David Fabricius, as well as his troubled relations with Tycho Brahe's heirs, deeply interfered in the problems presented in the New astronomy. 7 Voelkel's book gathers extensive material confirming the thesis of a constructed narrative, so that today it is hardly possible any longer to maintain that the New astronomy is nothing but a hurried publication of the manuscripts on Mars.In the present article we investigate the intention of Part 1 of the New astronomy. Before turning to a minute examination of equant models in Part 2, which in the end would lead to the abandonment of circular orbits, Kepler presents in Part 1 an exposition of how the convoluted apparent motions of Mars were decomposed by ancient astronomers into simpler periodic motions, and of the traditional models designed to reproduce these latter. If the book has indeed a carefully composed structure as has recently been argued, it will be revealing to investigate the discussion on the geometrical hypotheses of ancient astronomy that opens the argument. We have avoided external considerations, 8 and followed instead the advice of
