Meningkatnya konsumsi kopi di Indonesia berakibat pada peningkatan limbah sekam dan ampas kopi yang mengandung tanin, alkaloid, dan polifenol. Limbah tersebut seringkali dibuang begitu saja sehingga mencemari lingkungan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengolah limbah kopi menjadi material komposit yang dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai bahan pembuatan suatu produk. Komposit terdiri dari ampas dan sekam kopi sebagai dispersed phase dan material tambahan lain sebagai matrix phase. Sebuah produk fungsional akan menerima beban mekanik dalam penggunaannya, berupa salah satu atau kombinasi dari beban tarik, tekan, puntir, maupun beban bending, bergantung kepada aplikasinya. Oleh karena itu penting untuk mengetahui beban maksimal yang dapat ditahan sebelum material tersebut mengalami kerusakan atau perubahan bentuk, yang biasa disebut kekuatan material. Dilakukan eksplorasi material komposit dengan berbagai komposisi limbah kopi dan jenis fasa matriks, dan kekuatan bending dari material hasil eksplorasi dilakukan menggunakan Universal Testing Machine (UTM). Untuk memaksimalkan pemanfaatan limbah kopi, penelitian bermaksud untuk mencari komposit terbaik dengan kekuatan bending optimal dan rasio volume limbah kopi terhadap komponen matriks yang paling tinggi. Hasil pengukuran dan optimasi penggunaan limbah kopi menunjukkan bahwa komposit terbaik menggunakan campuran resin epoksi dan semen putih sebagai matriks, dengan rasio limbah kopi : matriks 50 : 50 yang memiliki kekuatan bending sebesar 29.63 MPa.
