Associé à des digitations blanchâtres il a souvent été interprété comme un réseau de petites fentes de gel périglaciaires. Mais à l'occasion de quatre fouilles archéologiques, nous avons noter que ce réseau s'est développé dans un sédiment mis en place entre la fin de l'Âge du Fer et le haut Moyen-Âge. Ces observations remettent en question l'origine périglaciaire systématique de ce type de réseau. Après avoir passé en revue les différentes modalités de formation de telles digitations polygonales, l'hypothèse d'un développement de fentes de sécheresse lors de stress hydrique holocène au sein de sédiments argilo-limoneux saturés en eau est défendue. Enfin une discussion sur l'origine de cette dessiccation montre qu'elle semble liée à la conjonction de processus anthropiques et d'une oscillation climatique.
