"El trabajo mata": Los mineros-metalúrgicos y sus enfermedades en el Primer Congreso Nacional de Higiene y Medicina del Trabajo, México, 1937Resumen: Durante el Cardenismo (1934-1940, las políticas sobre salud pública se impulsaron ampliamente, con especial énfasis a la salud obrera. Por esta razón, en 1937, el Departamento de Salubridad Pública y el Departamento del Trabajo colaboraron estrechamente organizando el Primer Congreso Nacional de Higiene y Medicina del Trabajo, donde por primera vez se explorarían temas relacionados con la medicina laboral. Ahí, los padecimientos específicos de los trabajadores mineros metalúrgicos pusieron en evidencia las fallas de la Ley Federal del Trabajo, debido a los elevados porcentajes por incapacidad que presentaban los obreros de este sector y a la dificultad de la medicalización de sus enfermedades.Palabras clave: medicina del trabajo, enfermedades profesionales, trabajadores mineros metalúrgicos, higiene industrial. Cuando hay pan, no vale la pena luchar por la vida y la salud en la fábrica, porque hay algo mejor que alcanzar; cuando está el bastón, la lucha no se puede hacer porque urge algo más imperioso, defender el puesto y el salario.Renzo Ricchi, La muerte obrera "D onde se manufacturan artículos de bronce y se niquelan, se está envenenando a trabajadores […] pues faltan ventiladores para que expulsen los gases carboníferos y los metálicos cuando funden y los ácidos cuando lavan piezas […] son varios los que han enfermado, algunos han conseguido de la empresa medicinas, otros ni siquiera eso".1 De esta manera describía un trabajador minerometalúrgico, en 1934, los peligros de su trabajo y las consecuencias del mismo: la enfermedad profesional.El trabajador minero-metalúrgico generalmente desarrollaba sus labores en lugares insalubres donde estaba expuesto a gases y polvos tóxicos, calor excesivo, cambios bruscos de temperatura, líquidos incandescentes, mala ventilación y choques de luz. A estas características de su oficio se sumaban las largas jornadas y la ejecución de la labor en posiciones incómodas. Por tal motivo, el trabajo en la industria minero-metalúrgica era considerado peligroso para la vida, lo que explicaría la efervescencia del Sindicato Industrial de Trabajadores Mineros Metalúrgicos y Similares de la República Mexicana (SITMMSRM), el cual fue el resultado de una convención de organizaciones mineras celebrada en la ciudad de Pachuca, en abril de 1934.
