• Os autores declaram que não há conflito de interesse. ResumoObjetivo: identificar a prevalência de bruxismo em universitários da Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri. Também foram investigados os fatores etiológicos, prevalência de desgaste dentário, estresse, e disfunções temporomandibulares. Material e Métodos: cinquenta e um pacientes (30 homens, 21 mulheres), selecionados aleatoriamente, foram avaliados através de questionário e exame clínico. A borda incisal e superfície oclusal dos dentes foram classificadas em: 0-sem desgaste, 1-desgaste em esmalte, 2-desgaste em dentina e 3-desgaste extenso em dentina. Dados demográficos e fatores relacionados ao bruxismo foram coletados por meio de questionário. O estresse foi avaliado pelo inventário de sintomas de estresse para adultos de Lipp. Os participantes que apresentavam desgaste dentário e hábito de apertar/ranger os dentes foram considerados como bruxômanos. Resultados: o bruxismo foi diagnosticado em 9 estudantes (17,6%). Foram avaliados 1428 dentes. Observou-se que 62,5% (255) dos dentes incisivos e 83,8% (171) dos caninos apresentavam desgaste em esmalte. Doze (23,5%) participantes apresentaram estresse. Houve associação estatisticamente significante entre bruxismo e dores musculares na região de cabeça e pescoço (p<0,001). Conclusão: a prevalência do bruxismo foi de 17,6%, sendo que os dentes mais afetados pelo desgaste foram os caninos e os incisivos. AbstrAct Prevalence and factors associated with bruxism in university students: a sectional pilot studyIntrodução O bruxismo é uma atividade parafuncional, diurna ou noturna, da musculatura da mastigação, que inclui o hábito de ranger, apertar, comprimir ou encostar os dentes.1 Fatores periféricos, centrais e psicossociais são relevantes para a fisiopatologia do bruxismo, o que pode predispor a dor nos músculos da mastigação e do pescoço, dor de cabeça, diminuição do limiar da dor na mastigação e na musculatura cervical, limitação de amplitude de movimento mandibular, distúrbios do sono, estresse, ansiedade, depressão e deterioração geral da saúde bucal.1 O bruxismo também está associado com sintomas de outras desordens bucais.1,2 Algumas consequências musculoesqueléticas e dentárias do bruxismo são: desgaste dentário, músculos mastigatórios hipertrofiados, fraturas e falhas de restaurações ou implantes, dor muscular mastigatória e deslocamento de disco da articulação temporomandibular. 3,4 Tem-se observado que estudantes têm padrões de sono normalmente irregular, caracterizado pelo atraso no início e no final do sono.5,6 O autorrelato de bruxismo foi recentemente mostrado em uma população tendo uma relação coerente com o estresse e transtornos relacionados ao estresse.
