The theory of students' approaches to learning distinguishes two fundamental ways of constructing knowledge: the surface approach, based on memorization without meaning construction, and the deep approach, focused on the development of integrated and consistent knowledge. The initial evaluations of learning approaches used the phenomenographic method, which required qualitative analysis by judges. As the field developed, self-report questionnaires began to be adopted. Despite the advances provided by both methodologies, they introduce biases that hinder the evaluation of approaches. The use of performance-based tests is an alternative to assess approaches without the biases of the phenomenographic method and self-report. For this reason, the Laboratory for Cognitive Architecture Research (LAICO) initiated an agenda to develop performance-based tests to measure approaches. The Approach-in-Process Test Version 2 is the latest in this agenda, designed for teachers to evaluate their students' approaches to specific content. The performance-based measure of the Approach-in-Process Test Version 2 is done through open items, and the Correction Guide was created to guide the teacher in evaluating these items. Although the Correction Guide has been previously applied in university disciplines, it has not yet been used in high school content. The Brazilian Ministry of Education recently proposed an educational reform called New High School, aiming to create a teaching environment suited to students' needs and promote better quality learning. The application of the Approach-in-Process Test Version 2 is relevant in this context, as it could be used to assess whether the quality of students' learning meets the expectations of the reform. In this regard, this article presents the complete completion of the Correction Guide for the Approach-in-Process Test Version 2 in the content “Adolescence as a social construct” of the Life Project subject for the first year of high school at a public state school in Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Article visualizations:
