La biolixiviación de minerales para la recuperación de metales es una tecnología de gran aplicación,rentabilidad, de bajo costo y amigable con los ecosistemas. En este proceso los microorganismos lixiviantes catalizadores del proceso son influenciados por factores biológicos, físicos y químicos propios de su entorno, uno de estos factores es la densidad de pulpa del mineral a lixiviar; por lo que, en este trabajo se tuvo como objetivo determinar la influencia de la densidad de pulpa de la arsenopirita en la biomasa máxima, productividad de biomasa máxima y velocidad específica de crecimiento de A. ferrooxidans solo y en consorcio con A. thiooxidans. Los tratamientos experimentales considerados por duplicado fueron cultivos líquidos discontinuos, uno con A. ferrooxidans y otro con A. ferrooxidans y A. thiooxidans, ambos en medio 9K con arsenopirita al 8 y 10%, incubados todos a 26 °C con aireación durante 288 horas. Se hizo recuentos de células en cámara de Neubauer tomando muestras cada 48 horas de cada cultivo. Los datos fueron procesados en el programa de Excel que permitió obtener las curvas y ecuaciones polinómicas de la producción de biomasa; asimismo, los valores de los parámetros cinéticos de la curva de crecimiento microbiano en las que la biomasa y productividad máxima en el cultivo puro fue inversamente proporcional a la densidad de pulpa, pero directamente proporcional para el consorcio; y que la velocidad de crecimiento en el cultivo puro fue directamente proporcional a la densidad de pulpa pero inversamente proporcional para el consorcio.
En la biolixiviación de minerales de baja ley para recuperar metales, como cobre, plata, zinc o uranio, Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans es bastante estudiada y utilizada. Su biomasa puede ser inoculada sobre minerales para mejorar la biolixiviación; sin embargo, es dependiente de las condiciones ambientales en las que se desarrolla. En ese sentido, determinar un modelo matemático que represente todo el proceso de obtención de biomasa, asimismo, de su velocidad específica de crecimiento, bajo determinadas condiciones, es muy importante, ya que puede servir para optimizar, predecir, comparar y monitorear el proceso de la biolixiviación. Esta investigación tuvo como objetivo establecer el modelo matemático y la velocidad específica de crecimiento de Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans en un cultivo líquido bajo determinadas condiciones de laboratorio. La bacteria fue reactivada consecutivamente dos veces en el medio de cultivo 9K y sometida a adaptación en el cultivo líquido con el medio OK con arsenopirita 1 % (w/v) e incubada a 25 °C con aireación. Se tuvo un solo tratamiento con dos repeticiones, en cada una de ellas se utilizó un biorreactor frasco de vidrio que contuvo 630 ml de medio 0K, A. ferrooxidans (70 ml) y Arsenopirita 8 % (w/v) y se incubó a 25° C con aireación durante 288 horas. Cada 48 horas se realizaron los recuentos microscópicos celulares. Los datos obtenidos se graficaron como logaritmo decimal de la concentración de células versus el tiempo para establecer la curva de líneas y puntos, que sirvió para determinar la curva y ecuación polinómica como modelo matemático con ayuda del software Matlab. Del mismo modo, sirvió para determinar el punto máximo de la fase logarítmica de la curva de crecimiento y la velocidad específica de crecimiento. El modelo matemático que representó la producción de biomasa fue una ecuación polinómica de cuarto grado con una producción máxima de biomasa de A. ferrooxidans de 1.13 x 108 cel/ml y una velocidad específica de crecimiento de 0.03 h-1.
