In this paper, we synthesize sedimentological, magnetostratigraphic and paleontological data from the continental vertebrate site of Puerto de la Cadena (Murcia, SE Spain), in order to clarify its age. The study site is located on the northern edge of the Carrascoy
ABSTRACTThe paleontological site of Las Higueruelas presents a singular opportunity to study diagenetic processes in a complex taphonomical context. Numerous Pliocene vertebrate and invertebrate fossils were preserved in particular lagoonal and volcaniclastic conditions. The diagenetic processes were studied in molars of the equid Hipparion and in ribs of the mastodont Anancus and were compared with the mineralisation in the molars horse and ribs of the recent elephant Loxodonta. In the fossils, the cementation with carbonate is predominant, as seen in cavities in the fossils which are filled with carbonate micrite without dolomitisation. The presence of basaltic rock fragments, which are intercalated with the fossiliferous levels cause a marked enrichment in heavy metals, especially in the less compate elements. Diagenesis resulted in different chemical and physical changes in the fossils studied (molars and ribs).
ABSTRACTThis paper deals with a sedimentological palaeontological and paleontological analysis of the Piedrabuena Water Well paleontological site (Ciudad Real, Campo de Calatrava, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain). The fossil mammal remains were accumulated by means of a low efficiency transport fan system, with mass transport mechanisms, which filled the whole of the Piedrabuena Depression: a circular shaped basin sorrounded by Paleozoic rocks (quartzites and shales). Neogene sedimentation evolved towards expansive palustrine carbonate sediments towards the top of the unit. The faunal assemblage composed of Rodentia indet., cf. Oryctolagus sp., Felis cf. issiodorensis, Hyaena sp., Dicerorhinus cf. etruscus, Sus minor, Cervidae indet (big sized), Cervidae indet. (small sized), Gazella borbonica and Hippotraginae indet. This fauna is characteristic of the Ruscinian-Villafranchian transition.
