Origens da medicina romana na história natural, de Plínio o Velho
As origens da poesia elegíaca remontam provavelmente à Grécia Antiga, adquirindo certa popularidade no século IV a.C., quando se torna um gênero literário. Em Roma, a elegia se destaca principalmente em fins da República e início do principado de Augusto (séc. I a.C. – séc. I d.C.). São renomados os autores Ovídio, Tibulo e Propércio, que divulgam a elegia em suas diversas facetas: amorosa, sensual, saudosista, etc. A enunciação da amada nos poemas faz com que as cenas se tornem vívidas e calorosas. A busca do amor, intenso, que leva à quebra de qualquer regra é o principal tema de Ovídio, o poeta eternamente apaixonado. Contrário às leis imperiais, o poeta sulmonense se dirige a soldados ou a maridos enganados e belas jovens para afrontar a recém-convocada moralidade augustana. É nesse ambiente que a obra de Ovídio consegue se destacar e ganhar originalidade na própria Roma antiga.
Os povos estrangeiros sempre despertaram curiosidade e o romano não seria indiferente ao se deparar com um povo desconhecido, habitante, talvez, de uma terra longínqua, com costumes e modos de vida diferentes dos seus. Plínio o velho, em sua História Natural, nos apresenta um repertório de crenças e histórias inusitadas acerca de diversos povos; bastava uma qualidade física ou moral diferente, um nascimento estranho ou uma longevidade excepcional para aguçar a imaginação de todos e serem consideradas essas qualidades como "monstruosidades" ou mirabilia. Os animais poderiam ser encontrados em lugares específicos, mas os homens se encontram até mesmo nos confins mais inóspitos da terra, distantes do mar, em lugares desertos, com hábitos estranhos. Divisamos no livro VII, por exemplo, observações sobre algumas etnias estranhas ao romano. Algumas observações são retomadas aqui e ali ao longo de toda a obra, e que tentaremos abordar com alguns exemplos.
Os romanos, desde suas origens possuíam subsídios de uma medicina doméstica. A medicina, no entanto, se desenvolvera há muito como ciência na Grécia – segundo Canali (2001), podemos estabelecer o “nascimento da ciência” no século VI a.C. – e, quando esta chegou a Roma, se deparou com certa resistência para se estabelecer. Pretendemos mostrar como se deu essa recepção ao longo dos tempos em Roma e como esta foi se aliando a antigos tratamentos mais domésticos. Utilizaremos para tanto a História natural, de Plínio e os estudos de Doody (2011), Miglionni (1997) e Van der Eijk (1999), que aprofundam as relações de Plínio com a medicina.
O séc. I d.C. é uma época prolixa em obras de cunho técnico-científico. Nesse meio literário, Plínio o Velho compõe a História natural, obra em que tenta delinear todas as ciências em voga à sua época, como a medicina aliada às práticas mágicas. O autor busca questionar este uso, frequentemente utilizado por povos estrangeiros, sob um olhar de acusação e, ao mesmo tempo, de defesa dos direitos romanos. Pretendemos, portanto, analisar alguns trechos que justamente nos revelam esse olhar inquiridor de Plínio sob os rituais mágicos.
