Objective: To evaluate the epidemiology of nosocomial infections in an Intensive Care Unit of a public hospital in the city of Caxias/Maranhão. Methodology: This is an epidemiological, descriptive and retrospective study. Were selected and investigated 23 charts and cultures of microorganisms of the patients admitted to the intensive care unit from May 2011 to May 2012. Data collection was carried out from July to November 2012, and analyzed using the Epi -info. Results: According to the analysis, there were 53 cultures in the specified period and the 32 positive samples, 25 were of tracheal secretions. There was balance in the distribution of hospital infection between the sexes. Among the records analyzed, 69.6% of patients were diagnosed with hospital infection, and the main symptoms were fever and dyspnea / tachypnea. The more gifts invasive procedures were urinary catheter and mechanical ventilation. The microorganism found more often in tracheal secretion cultures was Acinetobacter baumannii. This has high rates of resistance to broadspectrum antibiotics such as cephalosporins and quinolones. Conclusion: The limited number of requests of cultures and its failure to identify bacteria predispose to the empirical use of antibiotics, promoting the selection of multi-resistant microorganism. Epidemiologia. Resistência a Medicamentos. Enfermagem.
