O objetivo deste artigo é apontar a centralidade que as línguas indígenas brasileiras estão alcançando. O estudo científico das línguas indígenas está impulsionando a linguística teórica. A integração dessas línguas aos modelos universais tem levado a revisões nas teorias sobre as línguas naturais. No Brasil, três casos sobressaem: Pirahã, pelo debate sobre a recursividade; Karajá, por ser alvo de sofisticados experimentos psicolinguísticos; e Karitiana, por ter chegado à análise semântica, o último nível de análise gramatical que se pode obter.
