The production of visible light by chemical reactions constitutes interesting and fascinating phenomena and several reaction mechanisms are discussed to rationalize excited state formation. Most efficient chemiluminescence reactions are thought to involve one or more electron transfer steps and chemiexcitation is believed to occur by radical annihilation. A brief introduction to the general principles of light production and the main known chemiexcitation mechanisms will be given here. Subsequently, recent results on the mechanistic elucidation of efficient chemiluminescence systems, as the peroxyoxalate reaction, the induced decomposition of phenoxy-substituted 1,2-dioxetanes and the catalyzed decomposition of new a-peroxylactones will be discussed. Keywords: chemiluminescence; excited states; organic peroxides.
The peroxyoxalate reaction is one of the most efficient chemiluminescence transformations, with emission quantum yields of up to 50%; additionally, it is widely utilized in analytical and bioanalytical assays. Although the real reason for its extremely high efficiency is still not yet understood, the mechanism of this transformation has been well elucidated in anhydrous medium. Contrarily, only few mechanistic studies have been performed in aqueous media, which would be of great importance for its application in biological systems. We report here our experimental results of the peroxyoxalate reaction in completely aqueous carbonate buffer, using fluorescein as chemiluminescence activator. The kinetics are very fast in the used basic conditions (pH > 9); despite this, reproducible kinetic results were obtained. The reaction proceeds by specific base catalysis, with rate‐limiting attack of hydrogen peroxide anion to the oxalic ester, in competition with ester hydrolysis by hydroxide ion. Emission quantum yields increase with the hydrogen peroxide concentration up to an optimal concentration of 10 mmol L–1. The infinite singlet quantum yield of (5.8 ± 0.2) × 10–7 is much lower than in anhydrous medium; however, it is similar to quantum yields measured before in partially aqueous media.
The diversity of colors found in the flora results from the interaction of a few classes of pigments with light. Betalains are nontoxic vacuolar pigments that replace anthocyanins in some families of angiosperms and some basidiomycete fungi. There are two classes of betalains: yellow betaxanthins and red betacyanins both biosynthesized from betalamic acid, a fluorescent aldehyde derivative of L-tyrosine. Betalains are found, for example, in beetroot, dragon fruit, fly agaric, bougainvillea and amaranth. In addition, the petals of yellow varieties of four-o'clock and eleven-o'clock are pigmented by fluorescent betaxanthins. In this review we discuss the major aspects of the occurrence and chemical and photophysical properties of betalains as well as some of their technological applications.
Background & aims: Malnutrition is a common condition of difficult diagnosis in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. The objective of this study was to evaluate the nutritional status of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma in palliative care through handgrip strength and adductor pollicis muscle thickness. Methods: Data on the severity of liver disease, and oncological and nutritional assessment data, including body mass index (BMI), hand grip strength (HGS), and adductor pollicis muscle thickness (APMT), were collected from the electronic medical records of patients in nutritional outpatient follow-up. Analyzes were performed with all patients in a single group or according to Child-Turcotte-Pugh classification. Associations were analyzed by the Pearson correlation coefficient, with a p value > 0.05 indicating significance. Results: Mean values of BMI and APMT increased while HGS decreased as disease severity increased according to the CHILD scale. According to the Performance Status evaluation by ECOG, the higher the severity of the disease assessed by the CHILD scale the worse the HGS and ECOG values. A correlation between HGS and CHILD B and C was found.
