O princípio norteador das Viagens textuais se assenta no incontornável tema da escritura, elemento que conforma a tradição intelectual ocidental e que se encontra nas bases de constituição da própria antropologia moderna enquanto disciplina. É propriamente através da escritura que uma intrincada cartografi a de palavras, de textos, de livros e de discursos é delineada pela autora durante seu percurso.Em dois eixos que se articulam, o livro trata da escritura de si e do outro, cujo movimento é o da escritura da experiência na experiência da escritura. De tal modo que, em um primeiro plano, o que sobrevém é um tom declaradamente confessional, que mescla memória, lugares, perspectivas e amizades. Nesse sentido, a autora situa o ato de escrever na ordem do sagrado, ao mesmo tempo em que opera, seguindo a proposta de Giorgio Agamben, um exercício de profanação da "atividade mesma do autor, ou seja, 'transformando o ato mesmo de conhecer e de escrever em paródia da vida mesma'" (p. 18).Já o segundo plano é constituído por textos cuja matéria de refl exão se funda em outros textos perfazendo distintas camadas de autores e de obras que demarcam a trajetória intelectual e de vida da autora: Darcy Ribeiro, Pierre Sanchis, Jacques Derrida, James Clifford, Max Weber, os pensadores da Escola de Chicago, Claude Lévi-Strauss, Gianni Vattimo e Gil Vicente.
