O delirium é um achado frequente em pacientes críticos na unidade de emergência. Apesar de estar associado a um aumento da morbimortalidade, ainda é pouco reconhecido pela equipe de saúde. É um distúrbio da consciência, cognição e percepção que pode acometer de10 a 40% dos pacientes na admissão hospitalar. Desta forma, realizamos uma revisão de literatura sobre os aspectos relacionados í etiologia, quadro clínico, diagnóstico e tratamento desta síndrome. Os fatores de risco incluem doenças sistêmicas agudas, idade avançada, distúrbios cognitivos preexistentes, privação do sono e uso de certas medicações. A instituição de medidas não farmacológicas e farmacologias são as bases do tratamento. Por fim, propomos um aprofundamento sobre este tema, tendo em vista a escassez de estudos sobre o mesmo. Ressaltamos a importância da enfermagem, que deve ser capaz de identificar as oscilações no comportamento do paciente e intervir rapidamente.Palavras-chave: delirium, emergência, Enfermagem, tratamento de emergência.
