La contaminación del río Surco originada por el vertimiento clandestino de residuos y aguas residuales domésticas e industriales, afecta el ambiente acuático, la vida y salud humana; por ese motivo, el distrito de San Borja trata sus aguas antes de utilizarlas para riego de sus áreas verdes. Sin embargo, la capacidad de su planta es insuficiente. Una alternativa tecnológica eficiente para incrementar la capacidad de tratamiento y cumplir con las normativas ambientales vigentes es el tratamiento de electrocoagulación (EC). El tratamiento se basó en la construcción de una celda tipo batch de 30 L (representa el 0.5% de capacidad real la PTSB); donde se instalaron 20 electrodos en distribución paralela (10 de Al y 10 de Fe) y, se aplicó de 6 a 12 A de intensidad de corriente al tratamiento, durante tiempo de 10, 20 y 30 min a un total de 28 muestras, siendo cuatro de ellas controles y el resto tratamientos. Los resultados obtenidos permitieron determinar que los factores que influyen en la eficiencia de la EC fueron el tiempo de aplicación del tratamiento (30 min) y la densidad de corriente (12 A). La experimentación y aplicación de la EC demostró tener un resultado óptimo para ser implementado como un tratamiento complementario en la PTSB, lográndose una reducción de concentración de 98.1% de As, 86.26% de Cd, 91.37% de Pb y 88.88% de Fe, un 94.55% de DBO5, 99.99% de coliformes termotolerantes (CTT), y una disminución de conductividad de 439.4 a 36. 33 µS/cm; mientras que el resto de parámetros variaron entre 4.6 y 8.8 mg/L el oxígeno disuelto, entre 6.5 y 7.8 el pH, y la temperatura Δ 0.8 y Δ 6.2 °C.
