The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the psychometric properties in a sample of Mexican men of Muscle Appearance Satisfaction Scale instrument (MASS; Mayville, Williamson, White, Netemeyer, & Drab, 2002), created for the purpose of assessing symptoms of muscle dysmorphia. The sample consisted of 521 male Mexican high school (n = 198) and university (n = 323) with an age range of 14 -25 years ( x ̅ = 19.06 S.D. = 2.60). The results show that the Mexican version has a total alpha of .91. Unlike the original scale had 5 factors, this version introduced a structure of four factors explaining 66.34% of the total variance, which were: 1) injury and muscular test (α = .90), 2) use substance (α = .83), 3) Unit to exercise (α = .80) and 4) muscle satisfaction (α = .77). It can be concluded that the MASS, where Mexican version, has good psychometric properties and is useful for assessing symptoms of Muscle Dimorphic Disorder (MDD) in Mexican men.
Background Binge eating disorder (BED) is the most frequent eating behavior among the general population (Guerdjikova in Med Clin 103:669–680, 2019). Many studies on interventions and BED treatments have been carried out in the United States and Europe, few have been reported in Latin American populations. People with this disorder not only have physical consequences of it but also social and psychological ones, therefore a multidisciplinary treatment approach is a good option to treat this condition. Objective To evaluate the feasibility of a multidisciplinary online intervention (i.e., psychological, nutritional, and physical activity) in patients with BED. Method The design was a case series study of two clinical treatment groups, with pre-test and post-test psychometric measures along with two follow-ups (at 2 and 6 months). Fifteen people diagnosed with BED (2 men and 13 women), with a mean age of 34.93 years (SD=11.91) and a mean initial BMI of 42, participated in this study. The treatment was carried out over the span of 28 sessions, each one being two hours per week consisting of 1 hour of group therapy and 1 hour of individual therapy. There were four evaluations: pre, post and two follow-ups. Results Five patients did not complete the treatment (30%). The comparisons were made through the non-parametric Friedman test, finding a statistically significant decrease in binge eating symptoms (x2=15.57; p=.001), anxiety symptoms (x2=15.96; p=.001) and depression (x2=15.03; p=.002). There was an improvement in clarity (x2=11.60; p=.010) and emotional regulation (x2=7.75; p=.050), only in women. The patients reduced their body weight, and improved their eating and exercise habits by introducing fruits and vegetables and including 20-30 minutes of physical activity into their daily routine. Regarding the Objective Clinical Change Index, in terms of the objective clinical change, a positive change was observed in all the variables addressed. Conclusions The data presented allowed us to conclude that the online multidisciplinary intervention was effective in the treatment of BED. Trial registration Retrospectively registered
From a multifactorial perspective this study present a review about the family factors associated to eating disorders, considering theoretical and empirical contributions in national and international journals articles . The find of the research about the Eating Disorders and Family, indicate that the principal topics investigated are: family functioning, daughters and fathers relationships, stressful experiences, family psychopathology, attitudes and behaviors about weigh, eating and body image in the affected families. We conclude recognizing the heterogeneity of the families with Eating Disorders and the complex combination of family factors associated to eating psychopathology. More research is suggested about: family functioning in EDNOS patients, the father´s role, protective factors, coping stress, body image and family food.
ResumenBody image is considered a multidimensional construct that involves three main components: perceptual, subjective and behavioral. The Multidimensional Body Self Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ) is considered the most comprehensive measure for assessing body image. The MBSRQ is a self-report inventory, which comprises 69 items grouped into 10 sub-scales that measure evaluation and orientation appearance. Only a few instruments in Mexican population exist that asses in a multidimensional way male body image The aim of this study was to obtain the psychometric properties of MBSRQ in male population. The sample was composed of 232 college male participants of a Public institution of Mexico City Metropolitan Area with an average age of 20.59 years (SD = 2.65). Reliability analysis was obtained, at the test (α = .88) and re-test (α = .86). The test-retest correlation was r = .85. Ten factors were obtained, that explained 64.48%, of the total variance, with alphas of .55 to .93. The results show that the MBSRQ is a useful instrument in male population for multidimensional assessment of body image in men because of its factorial structure and excellent internal consistency and test retest reliability.
This study was conducted with the aim to compare the family functioning in women with different level of eating alteration: clinic (AN, BN, EDNOS) and risk to ED; also to assess the risk and protective effects of family functioning over the participants’ diagnosis. 135 women participated; they were diagnosed with clinic interview and answered three questionnaires: EAT, BULIT and FES. The results confirmed that the ED symptoms are more pronounced in the clinical groups (BN, EDNOS), especially there were more compensatory behaviors in clinical groups than the risk group. The bulimic group has the poor family functioning. The correlational analysis confirmed some negatives associations between ED symptoms and family functioning. In consequence, the logistic regression models indicate that encourage the development dimension has a protective effects to decrease the probability to have ED, however, the contribution is limited because the models leave a large amount of unexplained variance. The findings are discussed from the multifactorial perspective where the family functioning should be interpreted in conjunction with others individual and social factors associated to ED. Key words: Eating disorders, symptomatology, family functioning, protection.
